Gaming With Mum and Dad

For me, it all started with Farming simulator from the age of 5. Once he started, he was hooked. It taught him so much- patience, value of money, problem solving, making something to sell it for something else in return etc etc. It's great because there's also no addictive mechanisms or time pressures that happen a lot in games these days. Everything was at his own pace and he could build and partake in his own world as he saw fit.

How old is he might I ask?

My (now) five year old started out playing a few games I had on the PC. Very simply indie games that you just kind of felt out the movement. There was this fantastic little game where you navigate around a world full of brightly coloured bouncing balloons that she absolutely adored.

Then when she was a bit older she moved onto Donut County on the Switch. She absolutely adores that one, to the point that she's beaten it on her own. I recommend that to every parent who asks.

Granite, in Happy Father's Day all! Got any plans? Don't work too hard, this is the one day I year you are socially allowed to put your feet up and do next to nothing.

Hi! I'm also a Jason. I'm 51 and the father of three. My kids are a bit older now with the oldest being 18 and youngest 13, but we are all pretty much avid gamers. For me it was something I was doing before I met my wife and us starting a family. I did a lot to try to ease my kids into gaming by encouraging games with little or no violence. Minecraft was the gateway for all of my kids, that and a Wii.

Hey everyone!

I’m Jason, turning 40 (yikes) in August and married with a 6 year old.

Gaming for me took a shift when he was born(rightfully so) and now I try to squeeze my hobbies in when I can. I don’t really like to sacrifice sleep so looking at compromise and a lot of scheduling in advance!

I used to be big into multiplayer experiences but not with unknown availability I’ve really shifted to more engrossing story games. The Switch has been great as it allows me to play and share space with my wife vs my office downstairs. Kinda wish I splurged on a Steamdeck…..

My son loves Mario Kart and only plays sparingly now which I prefer as I would rather him slowly adopt a gaming interest.

Thanks for the community.

Hey! This is a great sub. I kept trying to sit down to type something out here but kept getting pulled away...sure you guys know how that feels xD I'm slowly discovering having less and less time to play games as I've not got a 1 month old with my wife. Also have a 6yr old who spends time with his mum separately to me as we're no longer together.

6yr old currently loves farming simulator, power washing simulator and Minecraft. I love driving and racing games, whenever I get the chance... xD

@danielholt When people are talking about gaming with parents I always think of my parents. Then I realize... I am the parent they're talking about.

It's odd. At this point my kids are more interested in youtube than actually playing games. Although my youngest at 6 enjoys watching me play games he's interested in (minecraft with railroading and city skylines).

(I was hoping a gaming focused kbin would pop up before getting an account but I wonder if I should just get a general account.)

Hey, I'm Todd. My brother and I grew up playing with our dad, and now I play with my kids. As my dad used to say, "The family that slays together, stays together." :)

These days I play Destiny2 and Honkai Star Rail, and dabble in other games, plus whatever the kids are into. Valorant comes and goes, as does Genshin Impact and Splatoon.

Hi, I'm John, father of two. I'm 47 and used to be a really big gamer but as our house is so tiny, the youngest is gaming downstairs all the time (he's autistic). He's also there as he has no space in his shared bedroom where his older brother is also gaming on his PC. So I kind of game possibly for a few hours when they're in bed, occasionally. 😊
