Is this enough or is this "too little too late"?

Linus Sebastian addresses error handling and ethics in a new video https://www.theverge.com/2023/8/26/23846889/linus-tech-tips-gamersnexus-harassment-controversy-response

Granite,

@majorlinux He'll take a hit... but I think his business will be fine if nothing else comes out.

We should really replace email.

“Millions” of sensitive US military emails were reportedly sent to Mali due to a typo https://www.theverge.com/2023/7/17/23797379/mali-ml-typo-us-military-emails-leak

Granite,

@majorlinux I guess they should have stuck with fax!

Mastodon absolutely needs more journalists. We should not have millions of people boosting one another’s ideas without a solid contingent of people in here professionally trained to vet stories, check facts, and use best practices for sharing news. It is, imo, an urgent issue & critical for the ongoing success of the fediverse

Granite,

@seachanger At one time people were dreaming of news outlets setting up their own mastodons so we'd know know accounts on those servers were official accounts.

I noticed that lots of fedi-regulars have more or less moved back to twitter. That drug is just too strong, methinks 💉 💊

Granite,

@jerry I find myself split. There's still people of interest for me on bird site. Mastodon doesn't ping me the way birdsite does, so sometimes I neglect checking on Mastodon. Others have been telling me to check out spoutable. But I'm not sure how many directions my attention should be split!

why do cultures pray to like, their dead ancestors?

why not pray to the children of.... like 100 years after your dead

for forgiveness.

for the trees you plant

Granite,

@risottobias I'll have lots of time to pray it forward in the afterlife. Gotta give those bored ancestors something to do now.

I will be adding PGP signatures to the back of my business cards that have NFC. This has been a fun experiment with my best friend who is a graphic designer. Trying to conceptualize a modern business card for in a post COVID world

Granite,

@chiefgyk3d I always thought PGP was pretty cool. I even used a PGP plug-in on ICQ with my now wife. (She probably thought it was weird). Where does it get used these days? I can't imagine trying to use it in mainstream email as it seems as awkward now as it was 15 years ago (maybe even more awkward now that it's web-based).

Granite,

If you can see this, you're federating with Mastodon as I'm replying with my Mastodon account!

MattTheDev, to random

Alright .. kbin/nerdbin.social progress update!

  1. Registration works. Emails get sent. Confirming email activates the account. Huzzah!

  2. Next? Federation. I'm not seeing "random" magazine get populated .. like the guide says it should.

Into the configs I go!

Granite,

@MattTheDev Federation seems to require people to manually add magazines from the outside, or outsiders to follow you.

Granite,

@MattTheDev @kbinMeta Yeah.... I tried commenting on your thread on the nerdbin and it didn't seem to go through. Although my mastodon says it thinks its communicating with you. ("No failures on record" in the federated settings section). Best of luck!

I made a Magazine called @GamingInTheCloud to discuss our love of cloud gaming. Come say hello!

Granite,

@ForeTeeThree @m3t4lw01f @GamingInTheCloud the experience is a lot better with a "threaded" account. Like if you stumble across a Lemmy or kbin post you can easily post from mastodon. But if you want to be active participant and follow essentially subreddits it's best to get an account.

Trying to see if there is a way to have a managed host for and before I think of spinning up a box in the cloud. I also need to make my server just deciding if I want to go through with a Cloudflare tunnel to a network in my lab or possibly a cloud host. Decisions... Decisions... If anyone knows of a good managed host and especially if they take cryptocurrency for payment let me know as I love having @mastohost manage this mastodon server

Granite,

@chiefgyk3d @mastohost

I considered if it was worth making a but I decided it was technically too time consuming for me. (And maybe even a bit risky given my inexperience). A managed thing that would be as easy as turning on a wordpress site maybe would have gotten me on board.

Granite,

@mastodonmigration @chiefgyk3d @mastohost

It's exciting times for sure. My contribution of now will be excitement. If my day job was more tech focused I definitely would have given it a whirl. (My comments were more observation than complaint. I certainly appreciate things are at the new and developing stage!)

Granite, to datahoarder

@datahoarder Oddly the daily Google Drive posts have dried up since moving to Lemmy? I hope this means people have found more sustainable storage.

Granite,

You should make a dedicated post looking for help! 🤣

Granite,

@danielholt When people are talking about gaming with parents I always think of my parents. Then I realize... I am the parent they're talking about.

It's odd. At this point my kids are more interested in youtube than actually playing games. Although my youngest at 6 enjoys watching me play games he's interested in (minecraft with railroading and city skylines).

(I was hoping a gaming focused kbin would pop up before getting an account but I wonder if I should just get a general account.)

Looks like and keep being mentioned together, which to me suggests we might have averted "mastodonization" of the — i.e. a situation where the whole network gets identified with a single piece of software. 🎉

This is the way. :blobcatcool:

I made a video showing how to post, like and reply to a The same principles work for . I should learn how to post this video to the fediverse.

Granite,

@ContentSpy Zero thus far but I hope to get one soon. Waiting to see if a gaming focused Kbin starts up!

risottobias, to random
Granite,

@risottobias I bet they could draw things out a little bit longer by having one of the mods step forward as "still willing to moderate." And then close things back down again. Can a subreddit be set as all posts must be vetted before being displayed. And then just be very slow at approving?

Granite,

@tacticaltweaker it said there was an option for some mods to return who were willing to moderate. I wonder if they could come back as saboteurs. Is there an option to set all new posts as "require approval before showing?" They could just be really slow at approving new posts. It could extend things at least a few days.

Granite,

@stux If you see this, federation with mastodon is working.
