FaithfullJohn,

Some nice beach boulders from during yesterday's wet and murky fieldwork in Iona with PhD student Kang. Two mylonized somethings (left and right) and a gneiss (centre) sitting on garnet-pyroxene meta-ironstone in the rain 😊

FaithfullJohn,

... and also from yesterday, here's a wee handful of proper Iona greenstones: pebbles of Lewisian serpentine marble. There is a lovely range of textures and colours in these marbles. I never get tired of them 🥰 🤩 😊

FaithfullJohn,

...one of the very loveliest things about Iona greenstone pebbles is that they have been collected and enjoyed by local people and visitors to Iona for hundreds of years, as well as being used for making jewellery. There is still a beautiful tradition of leaving greenstones for sale by gates on the island, with an "honesty box" for cash, to support charities. Also carrying a greenstone was rumoured to protect from drowning...😊
