borkcorkedforks,

I feel like they're a good budget option but not ideal for everyone. A pistol is the best for convenience with storage or to be able to use your carry for home defense. A semi-auto rifle or PCC is probably easiest to learn and use under stress. Any long gun will be harder to store in a quick access safe but there are options.

gentleman,

@borkcorkedforks I agree shotguns are not for everyone, especially someone who is new to firearms. I’m most comfortable using mine because I’m mostly a shotgun guy and I have confidence that I can hit what I point at because I’ve used the same gun for more than 30 years. Browning A5 “light” 12 with a buck barrel. There is a good distance between my house and the neighbors. That said, I plan to pick up a semi-auto 9mm so I have a good sidearm and also an AR well in advance of the next election cycle

HelixDab,

Good breakdown. There's a lot of information there that's not just for shotgun that all people worried about home defense need to think about.

For me, personally? Top choice, if money is no object and I live in a pemissive state, is an SBR with a suppressor shooting frangible ammunition. Faster reloads, easier to clear most malfunctions, less length in tight spaces, and frangible ammunition reduces the odds of overpenetration. But that's just me and my situation. :)
