is SO close to getting a good state flag (design F1953 obviously), so... as a Minnesotan I definitely expect a major disappointment at the 11th hour tomorrow when the commission inevitably chooses the worst possible corporate-y flag design instead 😭

@jonah Embarrassingly, I kind of liked "Old Wavy" (F944), until CGP Grey straightened me out: BREAKING FLAG NEWS: Minnesota Getting a New Flag. Yeah; we need the "Polaris Tri-Color Hoist" (F1953).

Waiting to be angry about the commission making the wrong choice. Then again, they are zeroing in on a new State Seal that's "a banger" (again, CGP Grey's words), so maybe there's hope.

@agarithil ahh, I didn’t even look at our new seal until watching that video. Pretty epic. CGP Grey is great, I wonder if he’ll do a seal ranking next 😆

@jonah Well, the good news is that it looks like the Commission is moving ahead with the Polaris Tri-Color. The bad news is that it sounds like they're dead set on fiddling with it.

This is pretty breaking news at this point, so details may change/clarify over the next couple days, but my source right now is Here’s the final overall design for the new Minnesota state flag — but tweaks are expected by MPR News.

The article contains a handful of variations on the design, and it's not clear if they're specifically being seriously considered, or if they're more just random examples of how the design could be tweaked.

But holy hell, all the variations are (IMNSHO) clearly messing up one or more elements of the original design. Here are the four variations at the top of the article:

Four variations of the "Polaris Tri-Color" design for the new Minnesota, US state flag

Am I crazy, or do those all more or less ruin the design?

@agarithil this is so f—ed up 😭 BUT… I’ll reserve my judgement until the final decision because there are some elements I could be persuaded to agree with changing…

I’m coming around to the idea of an asymmetrical K to make it resemble the actual shape of Minnesota tbh. Obviously not the version you posted that loses the tri-color though lol

@agarithil this is the chosen design uploaded to the commission’s website currently, similar to the 3rd one you found, but it’s still subject to change until Tuesday.

I personally really hope they adopt the same green and blue colors from the new state seal. If they did that to this design I think I’d be content, although I still wouldn’t agree with the color re-ordering here.

@jonah Well, that's better than it could have been. And as you say, it's still subject to tweaks until Tuesday.

I much prefer the original star to this (or the other) variation. Also, agreed on the colors and their order. This is Minnesota. That blue is supposed to be water, but move it up top and it becomes sky. And sure, we're the "land of sky-blue water", but still--it's about the water, not the sky.

I'm not using a color-calibrated monitor, so I'm taking the colors I'm seeing with a grain of salt, but I did like the muted "northern cozy" of the original colors. I think the blue & green from the new seal are close to the original blue & green of this flag, and would probably more-or-less have that same "northern cozy" vibe, and tying the flag & seal together with a (mostly?) common palette seems like a strong design move (though I know nothing about design, so don't give my opinion here a lot of weight).

At the end of the day, so much of this is subjective. But for my money, I feel like each of the changes in this version is a degradation of the original element. I just hope that the Commission doesn't feel compelled to change something just to "put their mark on it" or justify their time or whatever political nonsense. You were handed a perfect flag; be grateful and run with it.

@agarithil what I will say about this new star variation compared to the original star is that it reminds me more of this Scandinavian design, which seems fitting for Minnesota and I appreciate as a Norwegian https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selburose

@jonah I assume you've seen this piece of gold?

@nateb 😂 oh yes… and Minnesota’s current flag is probably worse than the examples in that video if I’m being honest.

@jonah Would definitely be happy with 1953 and 2100 (1953 is so good).

jonah,
@jonah@neat.computer avatar

@jumbanho my initial gut feeling was 2100, but what's that gonna look like vertically on a wall? Terrible, I think. The color scheme of 1953 definitely grew on me a lot too, I'm kind of in love with this flag 😍

anyone who unironically likes flag design F944 can no longer be my friend /j

of course none of these hold a candle to Laser Loon. RIP
