Honestly dude start a Patreon or something even if you only do it for temporary. I would chip in $5/month for a while to pay for server costs if it means getting a stable site and a viable alternative to Reddit.
I am of the same mindset. I highly doubt Reddit is going to be Digg. It is just so massive. But if kbin peels off even a small amount of people this place starts to look pretty vibrant. As long as servers can hold up this place could be an exciting hangout in the not too distant future.
As you noticed, I had to temporarily enable DDoS protection. Someone is trying quite effectively to distract me from my activities ;p Unfortunately, this may cause some issues with the federation. Tildes honestly looks like the place I could see hanging out. Problem is that the site is invite only right now. That alone is going to hurt their growth. Especially when Reddit is in the middle of speedrunning their demise and there are refugees to be picked up.
They’ll kick dissident mods out, install their own, and just reopen the subs like nothing happened. There’s precedent of that happening I believe (although for much more reasonable reasons, like mods going rogue for stupid or anti-free speech stuff).
That is absolutely what is going to happen. They cannot do it for all 3k subreddits right away, but they are going to go full on martial law and get the bigger ones up asap.
