I was almost totally sold on the theory that she’s still alive. She survived being stabbed by Gabriel and only Ethan knows it, in order to fool the Entity.
I went to my second watch with this in mind. The movie prepares you for it - Ethan knows how to do it, Ilsa has done it before. She’s officially dead through most of the movie, until she gets out of the shadows to rescue Ethan.
Then I got to the scene where Gabriel kills her. At that moment the theory falls apart: she stays there, lifeless, for a long time. Not only Ethan sees her: Grace and Benji are there too. I don’t have a clue how Ilsa can survive that. The only idea I have is Ethan conveniently had some sort of magical drug on him that can fake death (like the one they use on Claire in the very first sequence of the first Mission: Impossible movie).
That would be too forced IMO. Maybe there’s a better idea? I guess we’ll only know when we see Part 2. But for now, I can’t see a way for Ilsa to be alive and I’m sad.
