I made a new blog post, and in it I show how I build a device to monitor the voltage of a 12V battery and share it over the Internet. Something that might be useful for remote astrophotography rigs or when building off-grid power installations. I'm using a Raspberry Pi Pico and some basic circuitry to make it all work. Take a look!

A Pi Pico, two electronic boards and a lot of cables in a small white box. From the box goes a bunch of cables ending with an XT60 plug. This is the finished device that measures the voltage of a 12v battery.

@stfn
That's great 'n all, but who is going to monitor the voltage on the battery that powers your raspberry? 😜
But seriously, great work. If I had the time, I'd botch together a solar powered, remote programmable watering system, because I'm too cheap to buy one in the store. 😃
A monitor like this would be really great.

@MennoWolff At the end of the post I am showing how to power the Pi from the same 12V battery as the one it monitors :D

Thank you! I'm too thinking of a watering system, maybe one day?

iambozdar,

@stfn I liked what you built. I will try to reproduce using Pi 3B. If it worked, I will get back to you. 👍

@iambozdar I'm very happy to hear that, good luck with your project!

@stfn @w84death nice! My 12V car battery died and it would have been nice to have a monitor/alerts on it.

@wook @w84death Yes, there can be many uses for this little device :)

julianlawson,

@stfn hi, not my thing, but wanted to say thanks for a clear explanation of "system, purpose, possible uses" rather than "hey I built an nx320 HAT on ESP and the v12s are 100%" that I often see with the hashtag.

@julianlawson Thanks! I try to make my posts thorough and complete so that they are actually useful

@stfn nice! I'm planning* a pico based solar/battery powered thing for the allotment/polytunnel and battery monitor data would be an excellent thing to have on that.

  • for over a year, lol, but might actually have the time for it this year....

@yvan Thanks! I have an allotment too, only since last year, so I don't even have a tunnel yet, but once I build one I think I will also add something that you mention. Another project on the todo list :)

This post took a surprisingly large amount of work an time to finish, I even burned one of my Pico in the meantime, probably because I made some mistake when soldering. In the end I'm super glad how it turned out, and I will be using what I made the next time I go do some astrophotography
