Fair points. Needs fixing.

Compensation for delayed and cancelled flights: Australians treated badly compared to US and Europe

@timrichards On a simple level, yes, penalizing a company for their issues needs fixing.

But at a deeper level, who ends up paying? It won't impact an airlines bottom line, they'll just jack up ticket prices and use that extra money to pay out the delay compensation fee.

Sure, it might motivate them to "try harder" to avoid paying out, but airlines already try to avoid delays - it's not in their interests to have them.

Will they have spare pilots on standby or looser rostering?

A spare plane/more maintenance staff/more parts at key locations?

I doubt it.

So, no, I'd prefer a lower ticket price and to take my chances on an airline doing the best they can.
