International trains )&^#$%^&(!!
(or should we say: room for improvement)

Daughter travels to Bilbao for surfing holiday. Friend takes plane, daughter takes train.
@Eurostar to Paris: Surfboard, no problem.
@TGVINOUI Paris-Biarritz: Surfboard?! Illegal! That'll be €150 fine.

Also TGVINOUI: Bicycle? Yeah, we have a separate section for that. Ticket is €10.
Airline: Surfboard? Sure, that'll be €50.

I was wondering about the longest domestic trip you could do by air in Australia. Glancing online, it looks like flying from the Cocos Islands in the Indian Ocean to Norfolk Island in the Pacific (via Perth and Sydney) would take about 12 hours flying time, not factoring in the transit time at airports. That would be one long trek!

After the recent headlines about Boeing, it is kind of comforting to know where to walk away if there is an issue.

Man the Midwest has been hammered today with tornadoes. At Omaha’s Eppley Airfield (KOMA), what looks like at least four rows of T-Hangers took a direct hit from an EF2, and wiped dozens of airplanes off the FAA registry. Man I am sad for the owners, no idea if there were injuries.

Screengrabs from , just look at the tornado warnings!

Long layovers can be one of the least desirable aspects of air travel. It takes so much longer, for one, than the coveted direct flight. But maybe that’s not such a bad thing. Writing for Business Insider, Taylor Rains tells us about the many travelers who are intentionally booking flights with long connections so they can explore the layover city. And some airlines even offer free hotels and food. Here’s how to book a “stopover.” https://flip.it/VfzbwQ

Today's bike ride included a stop at Groningen Airport Eelde to attend today's protest organised by @extinctionrebellionnl

While normal capitalist businesses are expected to turn a profit or they will go out of business, our local airport receives millions of euros in subsidy each year.

Not only do airlines benefit from not paying any tax at all on the huge quantities of fuel that they burn, but each passenger flying from the airport also benefits directly from this subsidy that we all pay. Fliers don't come even close to paying the full cost to society of their flights, let alone for the destruction that they're causing for future generations.

Why do we subsidize destructive behaviours ?

Interesting read. IMO you can tell it's by a British writer from this para (I'm picturing a booze-soaked EasyJet flight to somewhere hot):

"Typically, alcohol consumption and the behavioural tendencies of different cultures under its influence are the primary threats to a peaceful flight. Passengers on some routes are infamous for drinking."

I will so miss the 717-200 jets. I love just how steeply they ascend. I love how smoothly they fly. I love how reliable they are. I love how comfortable they are.

I know they are guzzlers of energy. And they need to be replaced with more efficient commercial services. But they are such beautiful aircraft. If I were up for buying a jet, it would be this one.

If you like a steep ascent, there's a lot to be said for visiting the local gliding club and asking if they would let you join for an air-experience flight... There's nothing quite like a winch launch ;)

(and you never know, you might find a sport you enjoy too!)
