Randomly found the first part of the Rayearth OVA today on VHS. Didn't know this existed before today. The story seems pretty different from the anime series based on the synopsis on the back of the tape. Should be fun! :Elaina:
@SapphicSelene I only found out about these yesterday! It sounds like the plot is very different, which should be interesting. I also loved the Rayearth anime series, so I'm all for more Rayearth content. :AquaYeah:
@CavoriteLizard It's very different from the TV series. Like Escaflowne TV vs Movie different. You really need to see it all though if you can. It's only three episodes. Personally, I prefer the TV series, though the animation in the Rayearth OVA is gorgeous. And I love the ending theme song. Ah, the 1990s...
Manga Entertainment (remember them?) released the complete OVA on DVD many years ago. It's long out of print now, but if you can find it, it's worth picking up.
@cymaiden@CavoriteLizard Hmm, I don't see it on my copy. I have the Discotek remastered MKR set which has the whole series in one package so there is no second one. I even checked my previous remastered DVDs of the series which did have two parts and I saw nothing there. Unless I'm just not seeing it?
Or was there a reissue of the blu-ray set that included the OVA? Either way I'm still good because I still have my Rayearth OVA DVD. I think I bought the TV series three times on disc! The original DVDs, the remastered DVDs, and then the remastered blu-ray. 😅
@NieA_78@CavoriteLizard Granted, I'm living in the UK so there may be differences in the box sets between countries, but this is the edition I bought back in 2020.
@cymaiden@CavoriteLizard That would be why I can't find it. In North America, the OVA and TV Series are separate licenses and were released by different companies. I think Discotek still has the TV series license for North America, but nobody has the OVA right now.
@NieA_78@cymaiden Ooh this sounds really different and absolutely fascinating. Amazon seems to have the Manga DVD in stock, though that complete Blu-ray set is really tempting. :bunhdthink: Both are definitely more convenient than tapes though. :blobfoxlaughsweat:
@CavoriteLizard@NieA_78 I feel I should point out that a Blu-ray box set containing the entire TV anime was released last year at the same price as the two box sets from 2020 cost individually, though it appears to be only a six disc box not including the OVA this time.
@cymaiden@NieA_78 The fact that the set is called "The Complete Series" when the OVA isn't there is rather confusing (and I wouldn't even have known from the product page that the OVA was included in the other set without you pointing it out!). Still seems like a nice set to have, especially in combo with the (cheaper) OVA DVD.
@CavoriteLizard@NieA_78 The 2020 release doesn't even upscale the OVA to HD like the TV anime, so there's really no reason not to just buy the OVA separately with the newer 2022 box set.
