@mikelech

Any recommendations for a beginner?

I do like black tea a lot, but i haven't been able to get into black coffee, so my bitterness tolerance isn't really high 😄

@RL_Dane
There's also "tereré": you pour into the gourd (on the yerba mate) something cold and sweet, for instance orange juice

This article portrays it slightly differently https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terer%C3%A9 but the general idea is the same

Good for a beginner with low bitterness tolerance.

@sherwoodinc @mikelech

I've heard about that!

I think I'll start with a mild Argentinian yerba and mild steeping temperatures (I've heard 140 °F is good for beginners), but I'll switch to tereré if that's still too bitter.

Spent a lot of time looking at beginner kits on , but haven't picked one yet.

@RL_Dane
You can put a little sugar into it too if you prefer to drink it hot.

Another variant I tried long time ago: yerba mate mixed with ground coffee. Great taste

Just don't tell this to any Uruguayan and we'll be safe

Yes, definitely don't want to mess with those dudes who have been drinking it for centuries. ;)

@RL_Dane Well if bitterness is the problem, maybe you can try these things:

  1. trying tea bags of mate for first experience.
  2. trying some blends which mix mate with other herbs (like Canarias Serena) or make your own mix of herbs.
  3. add sugar or honey to the mate (or the hot water in your thermo)
  4. control the time you are soaking the yerba mate with water (the longer the time the more bitter will get)

Hope this help you

cheers!

@mikelech

Thanks! That's a nice setup, what are you having, English muffins?

WAIT, does Stanley make a mate gourd and bombillo?

indymnv,
@indymnv@fosstodon.org avatar

@RL_Dane oh yeah, Stanley have Mate kit (gourds, thermos, etc)

And the breads are sopapillas (fried bread made with pumpkin which is very popular in Chile)

@indymnv

Ah, neat. I have had Mexican sopapillas before, but they look a lot different.

Stanley looks neat, but crazy expensive😆

@batvin3211

I've been learning a lot from the Yerba Mate Lab channel on youtube. He has a ton of really informative shorts, and makes it look really appealing

I've been comparing tons of gourds on amazon.

Do you drink argentinian or uruguayan?

@RL_Dane its been a while since I tried it. And idk what yerba mate I bought
