I'd like to see a publictransport.nz website that included every bus, train, ferry etc operating in the country. Sortable by mode; seasons of operation; ownership (public/ NFP/ co-op/ corporate/ independent); price etc.

@strypey Good idea!
We would be interested in playing if you start something.

Who's "we" in this context?

Really I see something like this as a job for Waka Kotahi, as part of a comprehensive public transport strategy.

But as a community project, there's various things we could do. The most obvious one being working with public transport operators to get them publishing their schedules as open data - with detailed metadata - that third-party sites/apps can ingest and display.

A publictransport.nz website is something Bridge Seat could kickstart, with funding for the initial development. Maybe from funds - whether public or philanthropic - aimed at reducing transport pollution.

But long term, there needs to be a plan for ongoing maintenance and hosting. I've seen too many promising public interest website projects vanish without a trace (eg kai.org.nz), after having initial development funded by short term grants.

@strypey @phlogiston Good points. Totally agree. Would be a good initiative to raise at the next FOSS4G Oceania SOTM

We are @alcinnz and myself. We have a small consultancy called OpenWork that focuses on open standards and opensource in mostly in the geospatial realm.

Good to know. I really need to start making a list of projects like this, with a plausible chance of getting funding.
