In the one month I've been in I've already been asked to sign two farewell cards. I've seen full aisles in supermarkets and dedicated stores that sell cards for any occasion one could think of.

Australia is a card-based culture, apparently.

Finland is somewhat the same. Every occasion has a card, from birthday and marriage, to graduation and Christmas, and farewell. They even send A4-sized cards for funeral to each other. For instance a guy's brother passed, and he sent cards to his nephews (one card each)!

There are big isles of cards in supermarkets and book shops. There are also some stands in post offices.
