I wonder what this means for all new unpurchased versions sitting on shelves or bikes. are they going to be inspected by default or are they being recalled

Finally. That crank issue has been well known for quite a while now. Luckily 105 and below are unaffected.

    How did this get through design? Surely someone must have noticed the assembly, unless people assumed it was going to be welded?

    Shimano has been making hollow crank arms this way for years. It works well if it’s done right. All carbon frames and components are simply glued together, too.
