Rainy day, the combination of rain poncho + overshoes works great!

I have had the rain poncho for quite some time, and it saved me more than once.

But when it happened that the rain got heavy, I got my shoes and ankle completely soaked. And it was not funny 😏

So I bought a pair of light decathlon overshoes (I think btwin overshoes 900).

Today we had some serious rain and I was able to cycle 7+7 km without getting wet (excluding my face…) and without sweating (this is the real advantage of the rain poncho in respect to waterproof jacket+pants IMHO).

The catch is that where I live there are rarely strong winds, except during thunderstorms (but then I would avoid cycling into a thunderstorm anyway…).

What is your solution for rainy days?

sping,

Yeah, big poncho fan. It can be made out of fully waterproof material that’s cheap and durable but you still have great airflow. It’s especially useful when it’s not cold and wearing a rain suit would be a sweaty proposition.

Of course they only fully work if you have full length fenders with a good mudflap.

I had a pretty good waxed cotton one that needs to be re-treated and I haven’t got to grips with that yet. Generally I have had some frustration finding good ones so would welcome recommendations. I picked up one from Cleverhood that is a bit meh - poor hand attachments, pointlessly breathable material that lets moisture through in heavy rain.

I sometimes use gaiters with it, but that still means damp knees. I would like to have some special gaiters for the purpose that covered the shoe and knee. They could be partially open at the rear for ventilation. I periodically contemplate trying to make some.

Do you have a examples of that poncho?

sping,

The waxed cotton one ? It was some small operation in Oregon that stopped business iirc.

Otherwise I have a Cleverhood Rover, that’s neither great nor terrible.

lgsp,

My poncho is from Decathlon, and I’m pretty sure it is worse than anything from cleverhood (at least I hope so!). The hand attachments are not great and the fitting is meh, but I love the color

my poncho is very bright

What about mine 🤣?

my diy mudflap

sping,

Nice! I see you’re also a fan of the reflective tape.

sopo,

Ahah dude I love your fender :D

lgsp,

Thank you! Low cost solution 😁

It is a lifesaver: the fender is too short and I found myself over and over with a mud line running vertically along the center of my back 😏

I don’t know why they designed the original rear fender so short!
