[META] Migrating from r/combatfootage

With the possibility of reddit taking down r/combatfootage some time in the future, I've been thinking that it would be a shame for all the footage that's effectively been archived there to disappear. So I was wondering what peoples thoughts are around migrating old footage from r/combatfootage to here.

Doing so could lead to a large volume of footage posted in a short amount of time, and possibly quite a few reposts, but on the positive side it would prevent a lot of footage from being lost, and could help this community grow with people migrating over along with their footage.

I don't mean to advocate for either doing or not doing this, but think it's a discussion that's worth having.

could consider peertube or some other archive system for video content. joinpeertube.org/en_US

guyman,

I'm getting a "language not allowed" error when trying to comment on new posts.

sirnak,

I feel like having the all time top 100 from reddit over here as well could help convince people to stay here after maybe briefly checking it. Seeing an almost empty community/sub whatever will surely put off a lot of potential users I think.

thebestaquaman,

Do you know how to download the footage posted to reddit so it could be re-uploaded and linked here?

sirnak,

For the downloading part: I've done it manually to create a compilation and it's really not that hard. There are many reddit-to-mp4-type of websites. Automating it should be doable as well for someone who knows the API. No idea about uploading it to IPFS though.

thebestaquaman,

I guess if we want to automate it we have about 1 week then ;) But in seriousness: If you could download it and upload the videos to a dropbox or google drive or something, I'm sure someone that knows IPFS would be happy to re-upload it

sirnak,

Sure but I won't be able to do it this weekend though. I'll check how to upload to IPFS tomorrow.

thebestaquaman,

Awesome! Doing gods work :D

sirnak,

So I actually already downloaded the top 50 submissions. No it's just a matter of uploading them. @ollie and @class are there any plans on the migration?

ollie,

I'm not planning on mass-scraping r/combatfootage to repost on here, but you're fine to do so as long as:

  • It's IPFS
  • Not a repost
  • Good quality

Be sure to not post every 10 seconds, have atleast an hour or so between each post so we don't flood anyone's feed.

sirnak,

So is only IPFS allowed and no other platform?

Thanks for migrating. I think lack of favorite subreddits is a major factor for some people (myself included) for now switching completely. This helps.

Lazycog,

I don't have anything constructive to add, but just wanted to say thanks for migrating! Glad CombatFootage is here.

LucidDaemon,

I'm working on building a cloud storage site and have about 4TB of storage I could spare at the moment.

ollie,

IPFS is imo the best way to go, anyone can help store parts of the footage. It's pretty easy to understand if you've ever used torrents. https://github.com/ipfs/ipfs-desktop

Once lemmy adds a proper video player/embed support ill create a comprehensive guide for the community on how to upload. Debating on whether to ban all other 'non-permenant' media (imgur, etc)

mayo,

This looks good. I downloaded the desktop app. People could post content however they want, as well as an IPFS link when submitting for archival purposes. Because right now it doesn't look easy to 'search' ipfs content, you kind of need to find a specific pointer to it.

thebestaquaman,

IPFS sounds like a good way to go. I get the intention behind banning non-permanent media, but I think it would hurt engagement more than it's worth, and that it would be better to "heavily encourage" more permanent storage forms than imgur, youtube etc. just my two cents.

ollie,

I agree that banning it completely would be too hard, but how could using IPFS for videos be encouraged?

thebestaquaman,

I think "pinning" (idk if you can do that here?) a post with a user-guide, and linking to a guide in the community description would probably be a good place to start :)

doyadig,

What is this app? What’s the purpose using it?

ollie,

its like uTorrent 2.2.1 but its got no file management features, isnt really stable in my experience and not ready to be used to share videos on Lemmy.

EvilMonkeySlayer,

The problem is where to store that footage. This has been a long running issue that OSINT has had trouble with documenting things like warcrimes.

For example Bellingcat iirc have their own private storage for just such things when it comes to documenting warcrimes because the footage often disappears due to breaking TOS.

Twitter likely isn't long for this world, youtube has removed stuff before etc.

Imgur has worked for me so far. But they do have a 1min limit on footage, which makes it a very imperfect solution. I am also trying out Catbox, to see if they work better.

V4uban,

Good luck with your community!
