OC Welcome to /m/fpgagaming!

Hi all, welcome to /m/fpgagaming!

After migrating from Reddit this little section of the Fediverse is dedicated to following news and making conversation about FPGA-based retro gaming devices like the open source MiSTer platform, products like the Analogue Pocket, and a whole bunch more!

There are a couple of reasons why we've migrated from Reddit to Kbin (part of "the fediverse"):

  1. Despite the recent Reddit protests, the leadership of Reddit has not only shown zero interest in significantly changing their plans but, more importantly, pretty open contempt for their community of moderators and users. During the blackout I gave Reddit a lot of time to make things better, if not right, but things only seemed to get worse. No matter what happens from here on out, it seems clear that Reddit ultimately intends to milk and exploit its community.

  2. The open source and decentralized "Fediverse" (made up of Kbin, Lemmy, Mastodon, Misskey, Pixelfed, Peertube, and other services) represents a better alternative to corporate social media and a healthier, more community-driven vision for the internet as a whole. I believe in that vision and want to support it, so I am weening myself off of corporate social media in favor of the community-driven fediverse.

With tons of cool stuff in the rear view mirror and a bunch more on the horizon, I hope you'll join us in rebuilding this niche little community from the ground up on a new platform that's owned and operated by the community.

I'll be doing my best to find good and interesting content to post here, but I could really use all of your help so feel free to join in! (Of course, you'll need an account on one of the many Kbin or Lemmy servers to make the most out of this place!)

Thanks all! :)

Leafstalker,

I also wish to join the others here in saying that we appreciate what you’ve done for the FPGAgaming community and setting up a new place for us to share our passion for the hobby. Thanks so much, donuts

lu_source,

Great to have an FPGA gaming community on the fediverse!

Fneec,

Just stumbled across this post in All and thought it was amusing, that I remembered what FPGA stands for but totally forgot what it's used for and how it could be used for gaming.
I hope this community will keep growing and that it will help with preservation of niche hard/software

Oh yeah, over the 6 years that I've been running FPGAgaming over on Reddit, we've seen a bunch of awesome open source projects (like the MiSTer project) and commercial products (like the Analogue Pocket or SuperNT) that use FPGAs to recreate retro gaming consoles with a high level of accuracy. It's been really fun to watch this space grow over time. :)

tortus,

Good luck, this will be a tough transition. I'll do my best to help. Kudos for the community doing this though, doing the right thing is often difficult.

Thanks!

I remember when I started r/fpgagaming on reddit and it was just me posting whatever news I could find on places like AtariAge and NintendoAge (where FPGA gaming devs like Kevtris and Bunnyboy used to hang out and post updates). So having started from 0 before I'm not worried about starting small again, and I honestly think that the whole "fediverse" concept of open source, community-run social media is a huge improvement over things like Reddit, Twitter and Facebook. So mostly I'm excited to get something going over here, even if it does start small!

Yoreo,

I saw your announcement on reddit. I'm looking forward to seeing this community grow.

Thanks! Me too!

I hope that regular users won't be shy and will help this place grow by posting news and discussions more than ever before, so don't be shy. :D

Also, big thanks to @MoogleMaestro for helping me get this set up quickly.
I'd like to make this place even better and more community-driven than the old subreddit was, even if it takes a little time to get the ball rolling again. :)
