I suspect most GenXers discovered the magic of Elvis as adults.
My only childhood memory about Elvis was in 1977 when he died.
After hearing the news on the radio that day, my mother cried. It was the first time I had ever seen her cry. I did not understand, but the moment is forever etched in my memory.
I discovered his music years later, after high school when my love of what was then called "oldies," started.
The next Elvis related memory was the late 1980s conspiracy about Elvis being alive in hiding.
Unlike today, conspiracy theories then were the stuff of JFK, Big Foot and UFOs. More tabloid fodder than the cult-like following of today's QAnon.
