Today Swedish brand is launching , a portable . https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/airinum/hale?ref=discovery. It claims to remove 99% of airbone particles incl. virus. There are no certifications like or for purifiers, other than , which doesn't give the same level of assurance. This piece of research from Aug22 is promising though https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35947419/, but Airinum stopped short of guaranteeing safety from for @longcovid sufferers. Thoughts? It would be a gamechanger for me

I don't know how the specs compare but something very much like that already exists for much cheaper:

@feral @longcovid thanks I’ll shop around!

Looks similar to the German ToGo filter which promises a CADR of 12 - 25 m3/hr.

@fae2535 @longcovid thanks! Clearly Airinum haven’t invented anything. The question remains: would you trust such a device over a mask? I still don’t feel confident!

@sheislaurence @longcovid

Oh no! FFP2 plus the ToGo in certain situations.

When I gave an unmasked 'friend' a lift in my car, I wore a mask and had the filter on high between the seats (my dog was also in the car and needed good air).

I wouldn't go to the dentist relying on just this small filter.

@sheislaurence @longcovid What I've learned about portable airpurifiers is that they do not clean enough air to make a notable difference. The problem is not filtration itself but how much air can be pushed through the filter at once. To protect from Covid, such a device needs to filter the air in the whole room at a sufficient rate which portable purifiers usually fail to achieve. This is what I have been told when I considered getting such a device some while ago.

@Krise_DIY @longcovid what Airinum did tell me is that the rate or 'Clean Air Delivery Rate' () was 8.7 m³/h. The research I attached in my original post mentions ">99.97% at 7.1 ventilation volumes", but I cannot find the unit. If it is indeed 7.1m³/h, then it sounds like the Hale is exceeding the ratio.

@sheislaurence @longcovid I just checked the stationary, medium-sized purifier I have at home which has a CADR of >140m³/h. In comparison, the 8.7 seem very low to me but I have to check the paper you attached in detail. In the end, the required CADR depends on your use case, i.e., on the size of the rooms that you plan to use the device in.

@Krise_DIY @longcovid yes, this one is a personal , that only works if you stand within a certain range. It sounds like you are talking of a purifier for an entire room (classroom type), which is a different beast, hence the differences in volume.

Krise_DIY,
@Krise_DIY@chaos.social avatar

@sheislaurence @longcovid Right. But my initial comment referred to those personal air purifiers that you would carry close to you, potentially. The way that airflow works, they are not able to create a bubble of safe air around you within a larger room. At least, as I have understood it. I would be very happy if I am wrong about that.

@sheislaurence @longcovid Also, the study you mention describes a setup where they simulated air purifiers operating in hospital rooms. I don't think the findings are applicable to portable, near-range devices.

@Krise_DIY @longcovid gotcha, then the difference in volume is really wild! The search is on...
