Nothing tells me more about how important communication skills are, than the emails my kids' school sends to parents.

  • They are only in French despite many parents being anglophone.

  • They provide a link to an online translator in the footer rather than just pasting in the translation for us.

  • They always lack pertinent info like dates, times, links and locations, leaving it to us recipients to all hunt for this info.

Etc

It looks & feels half-assed & uncaring.

@syntaxseed (if you’re comfortable sharing) do your kids go to a French-language school vs a “French Immersion” school? My kids go to French immersion and we were worried about our own language skills before they started but it was made clear pretty quickly that it was English for the parents, (mostly) French for the kids.

@krssctt Yes it's a full French school. They are 'protective' of the language to their own detriment.

I'm trying to make brand new little Francophones by putting my kids in the school - help me help you! 😆

@syntaxseed Not having the language problems here, but the lacking info is definitely frustrating.

The worst though for me is the lack of consistency: They’ll notify us of things via a mix of email, Facebook, and Class Dojo. Some things are notified on all three, most only on one of those three without any apparent logic.

And it gets worse: Class Dojo is a purely chronological timeline without any filtering whatsoever. So you live in constant FOMO, because if you don't read a notification immediately, it is very very easy to miss. (There are about 2-5 per day on average, so not huge, but a lot to keep track of in a busy day.)

And if you thought that's bad, consider that it gets worse still: If you don't remember all the details a few days (or minutes - I'm old) later then good luck finding them. There is no search, nothing but infinite scroll.

And we still haven't reached the end of the 'it gets worse' journey: So many of these posts are ‘Please see the attached PDF with important information’. So you can’t even just scroll and ready. No, every single message you need to open an attached PDF before even knowing what it's about.

Anyway, I shall stop here …

@michael Omg I feel that! The multiple channels is really tough. Luckily our school isn't tech savvy enough to do much beyond email.... but the "see attached PDF" totally happens all the time... and frequently the pdf is missing or has the wrong permissions. 🤦‍♀️

And these are the folks teaching communication to our kids!!
