I was there for some of that first Gathering. Having also attended Entrails, a northern new year party for punks from around the country, held in Nelson's Maitai Valley. Entrails was named as a poke at Entrain, the outdoor dance party that preceded The Gathering, and was later renamed The Splattering.

I was just a little young and green to get to Entrain. I went to a few of the Eudemony parties in Ōtepoti in the mid-90s, but The Gathering was the first time I can remember travelling across the country to go to one. I initially hated electronic music with a passion, but I liked the outdoor locations, the friendly people, and the lack of booze.
