Understandable, but sad. Remember that Halsey said that Trent and Atticus had been winding up to work on new NIN before she "stole" them to work on her album.
The title is jumping to conclusions in my opinion. I don't think it's the end and I don't believe Trent believes it's the end. If anything, it's a hiatus.
He's not really wrong (in my head I kinda feel the same), the real ground breaking music or something that just fills me up with what ever emotion it is are very few and far between now. I find myself drifting into avante guard stuff where there is a story to push it along for me, even if that story is outlandish.
