So, this is an idea I've had for a bit, and maybe see how far I get. I watch a fair bit of OldSchol RuneScape content on YouTube, and for the next several days, I have nothing but time on my hands.
I'm curious on how hard as an entirely new player on F2P it would be to successfully earn enough to buy membership in game (about 7M gold). I've never really gotten into MMOs before, but I've got RuneLite setup, and well, guess I'm ready to dig in. #OSRS#Runescape
Well that's the first quest done I suppose. I'm still not sure what I should start working on next. I do have this beginner clue scroll though, but as the old joke goes, 99 woodcutting won't chop itself :) #OSRS
Well, I found the adventure paths, and if I'm going to get loot, this seems like a good place to start working on. The open ended nature of games like this always make it a bit harder to dive in.
Well the first combat levels, earned by fighting goblins and chickens. Need to go plug in my laptop, but you know, watching YTers play this, and trying to fiddle figure it out myself is a world of difference.
Well I grabbed a full(ish) inventory for chicken. I have a task to get a cooked pike, and there doesn't seem to be any for sale in the GE so cooking will be needed.
Well, I got a few cooking levels down, but I'm def. struggling to figure out how to do anything efficiently, and on free to play worlds, there isn't a whole lot I seem to be able to craft as an early money maker ...
Well, another easy quest done. A farmer also dropped the Earth Talisman, which is a 1/64 drop, which is nice. Combat training seems rather slow though ... #OSRS
So, new problem. I don't have a great place to set a mouse up, and my wrist is killing me :/. I did try playing with just the trackpad but its really awkward. Think that's as far as I'm getting tonight ...
Well, new day, and decided to grind out the combat levels for the diary, while also collecting raw beef to cook. I need 20 cooking for a clue scroll (although I should probably just drop it and get another one ...)
Actually, I just figured out where I can small net fish, so let me grab a few levels here quickly. I also think I can sell these on the GE for some gold
Ended up woodcutting and fireburning for an hour, to the point I can now fell oak logs. There's an achievement for doing this in lumbridge but it doesn't seem to want to pop ... #OSRS
Thinking maybe grinding out a few ranged levels with the ammo I got from tutorial ammo and paths, and maybe runes ...
Well time to try out the stronghold of security. I got an air staff as a reward for Lv 5. magic, and I have a decent number of arrows, so lets see how this goes
Went and took a shower, and by time I came back, 5k gold waiting for me. Given a 1k initial investment, that worked out quite nicely.
Can afford a few energy pots, and maybe work on grinding out a few more combat levels. Not sure what I want to build the account towards ATM, but maybe base 20s combat. Plus I would like higher woodcutting for better canoes ...
Well I grinded out a few more attack levels, but food is a problem. Trout seems to be the best early game option so lets see how hard it is to get a higher fishing level ...

(for reference, its based off the actual Romeo and Juliet, but Romeo is very spacey, and seems to forget that Juliet is only appearing to be dead and then forgets her for her cousin. I am not making this up ...)
Doing some mostly AFK magic training. Using wind strike and Barbarians from the safespot lets me grab a bunch of experience while being able to do other things. At Lv 15 I get a fire staff for unlimited fire runes, but this is working fine thus far.
Well magic training went fast, reached 20, and might go further since I'll unlock some teleports. I also ran to the bottom of the Stronghold of Security for the remaining 5k in gold. Not sure what I'll spend it on yet, but ranged is an idea ...
Popped into the edgevile dungeon on the idea I could get prayer XP. Instead I got killed four times getting my gear. Finally managed to grab the ladder and teleport out but uh ... yeah, that didn't go well ...
Well, despite feeling like "blah", I logged back in and finished the Defense grind to 20. I think the next goal on this account is to hunt a skull scepter in the Stronghold of Security, which will give me a decent teleport spot, but I might need to do some tasks in first.
The answer is yes, you can safe spot them, but I'm missing most of my hits, cause my levels are still too low. I think I might go to grinding range (which is the last combat task I have for beginners) on the minotaurs, they drop arrows and are easy to safe spot ...
Two step clue. I could complete this step but the chef's hat is a 1/42 drop from a goblin. The red cape I can buy, although money is a bit tight. I've been playing for a bit over an hour, so I'll take a break then decide if I want to hunt the hat, and buy the cape.
Got it in 15 kills \o/. Just need a red cape, and I can do the clue step, but I think I need to grind some money first. Maybe doing more yellow dye ...
Tried a few other money making methods. Maple shortbows can be bought from the GE and then sold at a shop for a slight profit with world hopping. I do want to buy a bond from ingame gold, but I'm sorta thinking pies might be the way. They seem to always be in demand, and if I go through the effort to make pie plate, flour, and water myself, this could be extremely profitable ...
So I made a few inventories of flour, but I realized doing this in the cooking gild would be way faster since there's a bank right there. Problem is I need 35 cooking, but by bait fishing and cooking on a fire, I should be able to get that fairly quickly
Oh there are two cooking apple spawns. If I world hop, I should be able to collect these fairly quickly and bank them below. That would let me go all the way to uncooked apple pies which sell for quite a bit in the GE ...
Nope. Hunter is a locked skill, and some of these would take ages to complete.
Still, this is somewhat more easier than the mill in Lumbridge, since the bank in Lumbridge Castle is annoying to get to. Still, I need to think about this ...
Ok, let's do some math here. On average, an uncooked apple pie sells for about 450 gold in the GE. The uncooked version sells for more since other players buy it for quick cooking XP.
I need approximately 8 million GP to buy a bond. That's approximately 18k pies, but the math gets a bit more complicated.
For one, I need to make the pie dishes. I've yet to do any sort of crafting or mining on this account, but I essentially would need to mine clay, form it on a pottery wheel, and then bank it.
One for each pie. I could also buy parts of this from the GE, but for the sake of argument, let figure out what this grind would look like
So clay requires clay rocks from mining and a bucket of water. That said, the dishes themselves are pretty cheap on the GE since normally you get them back after eating the pie.
Oh huh, I didn't notice before, but pots of flour can be bought en-mass at the port sanin food shop. That saves me from having to mill it myself. Buckets of water can be easily be mass produced by a water spot outside the Falador bank. I'll have to load up the buckets by hand, but that's a one time thing ...
Actually hold on, there might be a better way. Instead of having to shuttle pots around, I can simply make flour right in the cooking guild, decreasing the round trips. Just need one bucket and one pot (and a fair number of clicks).
The dough itself sells for ~200 GP. Pizzas are also an option, although I would have to get my cooking higher, and getting tomato/cheese is a problem ...
There's also nothing saying I can't make money in multiple ways. Flipping stuff on the GE is always an option (and one I did a bit to make some starting cash).
I'm mostly mulling what rules I specifically want to
set out for myself. Here's some other options:
Crafting/smithing stuff, such as jewelry
Grinding 55 magic for high alchemy
Turning either stuff from the GE or world spawns right into money. There's a steel platebody spawn in the wilderness ...
Complete all F2P quests, I'll probably save Dragon Slayer I until I'm close to the cash to buying a bond
Defeat each F2P boss at least once + quest bosses
Get my best in slot gear. This is rune armor set, but that would require 99 Smithing which is ... a bit excessive. This is probably half a million to a million the GE
Mass produce a few items for money. Pies, pizza, jewelry, etc.
Anyway, couldn't sleep, so I went and finished 20 ranged, which will is the last combat path I had left \o/. I also got another beginner clue, which is a nice bonus.
So given I'm insonmic, I decided to log in for a bit. After a bit of practice, I found makign pastry dough isn't bad at all, and after a bit more of an hour, I've got 40k worth already. There's a pot pie spawn in the house, so I'm somewhat wondering if there might be able to make full workflow out of this depending on how quickly that respawns. Need to do some tests ...
Since there's a pie pan spawn right there, I can grab a pan and an apple and make it one pie per world easily, but it takes so much time that I don't think this method is worth it. I'm probably better either mass producing the pie pans myself or buying them. Still, 66k just sitting there is nothing to scoff at. Sadly, no skill XP for doing this.
Essentially, if I convert the pies to uncooked apple pies, I get a 2x price bump. They're sitting at around 30 GP a pop
Cooking apples are pricer, at 50GP a pop.
Buying both of these is still a good profit margin, but want to see what I can do that works the best. I don't mind putting extra time in, but I want to be semi -efficent about this.
Well, respawn timers are based off the population in the world. For worlds above 1k players, it actually respawns faster so maybe I need to do another hour of trying to make the full pies and see how long it takes ...
So I did an hour of making pastery dough and a few pies, and well, that's fairly decent money to say the least. This is a pretty viable money maker, but I don't get any XP for doing it which is unfortunate. I think towards killing bosses, I'm going to want to go get some prayer levels. I'm thinking 30 Strength/Defense, and then camping Hill Giants is the play.
I also want to do some crafting and mining, so lets start with that, since there's a quest I can do.
Yahtzee!. That also brought my prayer level to 15 \o/. I need 43 for what are known as overhead prayers (Protect from Melee/Magic/Ranged), which I'm going to need when I go to slay the dragon ...
Decided to try the mobile client for OSRS, this will be nice if my flight on Sunday has WiFi.
The big frogs behind lumbridge drop big bones which is my best source of prayer xp for the time being. Unfortunately no other loot but if I can get some gear upgrades, the edgevile dungeon might be more viable
I spent some time on giant frogs getting strength up to 30, now I think I going to get some crafting levels, and that means I need cowhide. Let me farm a few inventories, and then off to tan it
Grabbed 120 clay. I could go for longer, but I want to just get an idea what this is like. I need to use buckets of water to make the clay soft, then I can shape it, and make pottery for more crafting levels which is the plan.
Looks like the best place to take it is Barbarian Village which is about a two minute walk. The bank in Edgevile and West Varrock are close, but this will let me bank the pie dishes.
Going to play Runescape for an hour or so before the day really gets going. Claiming path rewards. I kinda still want to get a higher mining and crafting level, so I can make gold jewelry.
I could also do some quests for XP but I'm kinda "meh" on doing that right now.
So since I can't sleep, I decided to finish out the pie making grind, to at least get a 100k cash stack on my account. I can get cooking apples from spawns, but its a bit annoying so I'll sell the pies I have, then buy the remainer of the apples and flip them.
That said, I kinda regret having this as a normal account; I think I would enjoy ironman or ultimate ironman more, but that would be as a member, not F2P. #OSRS
Well I got the apples as an instant buy so I just made them all before selling them. This might take awhile to sell, but at least I'll have 100k when I next log in. #OSRS
Quite a bit of mining later, 221 clay. Not sure how far this take me crafting wise, but it's probably a few thousand crafting XP. That said, the cash stack is kinda hurting, and I would love to get some upgrades for the account ...
