I'm so glad Carmen Rubio is running for Mayor of for two reasons: 1) the alternatives are terrible and 2) most importantly, it's time for a woman to be in charge of this city. Men have had their chance for the past 16 years (no offense to my dudes out there) & I don't think we can say we're better for it.

@greendesignek what has she accomplished though? As far as I've seen, she might as well be dan or ted.

@enobacon she's overseen some reforms at BCD & the complicated rollout of PCEF. What has Mapps done besides tear out bike lanes? What has Gonzales done besides try to make Portland Street Response fail so he can claim it doesn't work?

@greendesignek @enobacon I agree that she's less terrible than the other two. But I've generally been unimpressed with her on the council. Perhaps it's just the bias of the media covering for her, but I've never seen her speak out against the more draconian actions of her fellow councilmembers unless at least one other has already spoken out.

@Karstan @greendesignek I'm totally willing to believe that she would be better than Mingus or Rene but I haven't seen the leadership happening. Maybe it's media bias but she leaves me wanting someone else to run.

@enobacon @greendesignek Rubio would often bloc with Hardesty, and she’s been the lone vote against some of Dan/Ted/Mingus/Rene’s boneheaded ideas. That ain’t nothing, though I’m still not wild about her track record (see Zenith, “idk more cops,” etc).

@press1forjosh @greendesignek such a low bar to be the least bad on Portland council right now.

@enobacon @press1forjosh 1000% yes. I'd also argue that Rubio has had to thread a very tricky needle the past few years due to dynamic political environment in Portland. I mean, how do we re-elect a mayor that everyone hates but kick our first Black woman off council after one term? In one of the most supposedly progressive cities in the country?

enobacon,
@enobacon@urbanists.social avatar

@greendesignek @press1forjosh It's the voting method, that we have a choose-only-one primary where a disorganized majority splits their vote, and the election goes to the plurality winner. That also plays into campaign spending, endorsements, who decides to run or not, etc. I guess Rubio won 60% in the 2020 primary so the media is probably pleased to have a three-incumbent horse race. Maybe we can't get a farther left candidate but can we at least get Vadim in there to split the right wing.

@greendesignek @press1forjosh Yes we'll have "ranked choice" now but the IRV race for mayor will have worse splitting than our manual top-two runoff did, as it is plurality-based elemination. The district proportional STV results should be okay but similarly, I worry about more than 3 progressives running in one district, there will be some 2nd choice votes that don't get counted even when your 1st can't win. The moneyed interests all have a huddle about this and get on one page to start with.
