@astian Are you chromium based? Because if google has its hand in it I don’t want it. Hence why Firefox is my current and only browser

astian,
@astian@mastodon.social avatar

@Lenshibo No, our base is Gecko base, that is, the same base as Firefox but other functions, features have been added to reinforce privacy and security, among others. use Midori, try it and give us the opportunity to be your default browser.

😍

Lenshibo,
@Lenshibo@mastodon.social avatar

@astian Ok now I’m interested. so tired of all the “privacy” browsers being just modified chrome. So to hear yours isn’t is pretty cool! I’ll definitely give it a go and see what it has to offer

astian,
@astian@mastodon.social avatar

@Lenshibo Thank you, we will continue working to continue improving every day and in each update, thank you for giving us the opportunity.

Here you can write us any doubts, questions or concerns. We will always be ready to help.

Thank you.

edgren,

@astian So, where is the privacy policy page for the browser? I don't believe you until I read it on such page.

astian,
@astian@mastodon.social avatar

@edgren Completely agree with you

  1. These are our policies https://astian.org/astian-privacy-policies/

  2. we are not a Big Tech

  3. We do not collect user information

  4. We do not sell invasive advertising, much less personalized.

  5. We do not use Google services, much less the Safe Browsing API.

  6. All our developments are open source and free software, this is our repo https://github.com/goastian

We invite you to see everything we do, we love freedom and privacy.

edgren,

@astian Thanks.

  1. Non Big Tech companies can log a lot of stuff in the background too.

  2. You don't collect user data, but you do collect an anonymized version of the user's IP address. Why?

  3. You do sell, but in terms of the user. Plus, one of your sponsors is Amazon which is a Big Tech.

  4. Thanks to the use of Gecko, yepp 👍

There's a lot of warnings about your browser. Mainly you're based in USA and that you require date of birth when creating an account.

astian,
@astian@mastodon.social avatar

@edgren That's right, you are right in many things, however, responding to your comments, my dear friend, an anonymized version of the IP because Matomo offers that option and completely anonymizes it, in fact we configure the parameters of Matomo so that the data is deleted in a period of 120 days and with a gap in location.

Sponsors? Well, it is just affiliate marketing and it is completely optional, the user has the freedom to remove or change it to their liking.

astian,
@astian@mastodon.social avatar

@edgren The location, although we are in the USA, all our servers are located in the European Union and nothing is brought to the USA. By the way, the majority of our team is Latino, Colombia, Peru, Mexico

edgren,

@astian And I also saw now that you use Bing for AstianGO. Bing is owned by Microsoft who is known to really break ones privacy. Plus, you use ipify.org to get ones IP address and a search result calls bing.com. "search privately and without a trace" my ass 🙂

You also seek for a better solution. I suggest SearxNG.

You also use Matomo for analytics. Have you followed the steps to not let it process any PII? If not, you're violating GDPR. Fix this or switch to Plausible.

astian,
@astian@mastodon.social avatar

@edgren Of course we use Bing and we advertise it and we have communicated it following the steps of DuckDuckGO, Qwant, Ecosia, StartPage, even Brave started using the Bing API, however we differentiate ourselves largely because our search engine will be open source and free software, when it arrives to a release phase.

The use we give to Matomo is purely statistical to know what we must improve and this gives us autonomy since we do not outsource any services and no one else, unlike us.

astian,
@astian@mastodon.social avatar

@edgren The use we give to Matomo is purely statistical to know what we must improve and this gives us autonomy since we do not outsource any services and no one else, unlike us, has access to the data, which gives us sovereignty.

edgren,

@astian If you really want to build a privacy respecting browser and service all together, consider follow LibreWolf's steps and really think about what I said.

Because as of now, you are not fully privacy oriented.

Plus, when I uninstalled Midori, the checkbox in the final step was labeled as "Tell Mozilla why you uninstalled Midori".

astian,
@astian@mastodon.social avatar

@edgren and to be able to continue saying that in Astian people are not the product. 😍

astian,
@astian@mastodon.social avatar

@edgren Of course, if the beauty and beauty of our profession is that it is in complete improvement and constant change, and of course we will listen to your words and suggestions to continue improving, our plan is to be completely independent and in the future to separate ourselves from Mozilla, leaving out the synchronization service that we know has a lot of Telemetry, we do not apply telemetry, we will improve and continue to improve to have a great product.

edgren,

@astian Sounds good too. But as of now, you have a long way until you're very privacy oriented 🙂 But be strong! You can do it! 💪

astian,
@astian@mastodon.social avatar

@edgren Thank you Thank you very much and that will be the case, of course we will improve, welcome 🙂

astian,
@astian@mastodon.social avatar

Thanks to the multiple constructive criticism received from our friend @edgren, we are in the process of updating our public information step by step, we have updated our about clarifying that "our data centers are located in the European Union"

Thank you.
