Itās more likely that strong FFB effects will harm you than the wheel itself. Just let go when you crash and donāt worry about the hardware too much.
I wouldnāt worry too much about pausing the game. If the hardware is not made for such high forces, than it would not output those. And even Fanatec should not be that dumb.
eBay is not available here, neither are Amazon and Fanatec. I ordered mine via an unofficial (but legal) delivery from another country where it is officially available and Iāll have to pay like $200 of import tax when it arrives. What I meant in āQR1s are not available anymoreā is that the firm that I ordered the setup from listed it as āout of stockā on its website. Also if it functions I donāt see a reason to change it. I donāt have the budget to care about noise or aesthetics
Fair enough, the noise and aesthetics arenāt what I would worry about, the flex inherent in the plastic is the worry, but if itās not available youāre stuck.
Have you considered building one of the open source wheel projects like openFFBoard (github page)?
You get direct drive power with open source software and can source a motor and parts more easily. OpenFFBoard has a custom controller and driver which you can buy but you can also make it work with dev boards and odrive/vesc if your ability to order parts is limited. The ffboard does make it easier if you can buy just that one part though elecrow.com/open-ffboard-stm32f407-usb-interface-ā¦
That said, and to answer your question as best I can, I used a T300rs for a while and it was fine, but both thrustmaster and fanatec suffered (and still do a bit) from some reliability issues. But no belt drive wheel is ever going to compare to a direct drive wheel.
Itās not like I can make a wheel myself. I canāt even lift a reasonable DD base. Anyways I found a way to get direct drives here. The prices are still not great but the reliability and upgrade path may be worth it. For now my main option is Fanatec CSL DD 5 nm. I can get that upgraded PSU if I need to and in the worst case I can just swap the entire base.
Another question now: doee that wheel have any common issues? Getting a warranty repair here might be close to impossible
Ah, I didnāt want to make any negative assumptions about your disability. Yeah if you can get an off the shelf one that would be much easier. I have no experience with the CSL series (or any commercial wheel, I went from the t300 to a 15nm peak ffboard+odrive wheel), but I hear they are pretty good. What you will get from the more powerful and expensive models is increased detail at low power in addition to the obvious higher output as far as I understand.
Afaik more powerful bases give a much better feel of high speed corners and the grip as well as improved self-straightening effect. These are very important things. Though I prefer offroading and driving slower cars so it shouldnāt be much of a problem for me. And also I heard Cammus C5 heavily uses OpenFFB technologies and itās quite competitive or even arguably the best budget DD wheel (unavailable here unfortunately) so I guess your setup is really good too
For me it is Automobilista 2. I like a lot of things about it, but the way I usually spend my time in it is casually racing with some friends and a bunch of bots.
I try to spread things out as much as possible among the games I have. AC and EA WRC right now but I have lots of hours in DR2.0 and AMS2 as well. AC and AMS2 are the fastest to get from startup to driving in single player, so I lean towards those if Iām time constrained.
Same. I sometimes have phases of one week where i play a lot of simracing and AC and then weeks playing other games, so the commitement for iRancing isnāt really there. And as you said, picking a random car like a alfa romeo guilia and a random racetrack like spa and just seeing how it does, is really fun.
Not sprints, but I did something similar with my ultimate+ set. I didnāt replace all of them, only 1, and the other spring is there in the original set. This produces a feel more like what is in my real street car with a brake booster where there is some pedal travel and then sudden increase in resistance.
Aye was a rushed post, Iām looking to do this but not sure what type of springs I should be looking for, so guess the question should have been āhas anyone done this and what springs did you useā.
Iāve looked around for things like upgrade kits and whatnot without success, so think Iāll have toā¦you know, buy a spring off eBayā¦ Iāve no idea where to begin.
In this picture I used a valve spring from a 1991 Ford Escort. Iām not sure this is ideal for this purpose, but I had a small pile of them in my parts bin so I figured it was worth a try. Since brake feel in sim-racing seems to be more about personal preference than reality (read some threads on that subjectā¦ itās a rabbit hole) I would guess youāll need to buy many springs and experiment a bit.
Maybe you could find a local to you industrial or hardware supplier and pick up a few?
