Babushkas of Chornobyl! I love this film. I watched it many years ago now. It’s absolutely amazing. When the full scale invasion started and reports of Chornobyl being occupied spread, I immediately thought the same as you. What happened to Babushkas? I hope they are ok.
Believe it or not I did contact the Ukrainian embassy here in London to ask if they had any information about them, but unfortunately did not hear back. I’m sure replying to randos on the internet was not their highest priority of course! But still, I wouldn’t mind knowing.
Wow! Looks like an amazing project. I had a super busy last month and forgot to check in here. It seems they collected the amount and closed the fundraiser. Hopefully, this book will be available to buy later on.
Very happy they got it funded - and beyond, a few stretch goals too.
The way some of the goals were phrased makes me think it will be available beyond the Kickstarter, I believe the purpose of the campaign was to fund a print run rather than to buy a copy of the book. Will keep you updated if I learn anything else in the updates (I did back it, so they’ll be sending updates about the printing process and so on).
Preorders will be available until 12 November. $1 for the ebook, $20 for print (plus shipping; for me, to UK for two print copies, shipping - from America - came to another $18).
For some reason I am not seeing initial posts boosted into Mastodon. Only replies. Not sure why. Maybe I made a mistake somewhere in the post and something about it prevents it being boosted into my timeline.
So this is a reply to a post about the Ukrainian Film Festival 2023, this weekend in London.

So this is a reply to a post about Embroidered Worlds - a Ukrainian science fiction Kickstarter project that’s currently ongoing.
@dana oof, delivery fee is nearly double the cost of the book
I vastly prefer physical books but in a case like this I think an ebook delivered to an email address or something would be preferable (not through amazon)
Agree, the delivery cost from Ukraine is quite expensive for one book. But I noticed you can add multiple books for same delivery (at least I checked up to ten books), so if you know other people who want the book - buying together will reduce the delivery cost per book (if that makes sense?).
Myself, I want to get it in English and Ukrainian (not that I can read well enough yet, but I aspire to so why not). But, it seems the Ukrainian and English version did not share the same cart, so I need to email them to find out how I do it.
Thanks for sharing. It’s helpful to have a bunch of good links at hand. Sometimes it feels like no matter how often this information is shared the propaganda continues. We can’t tell how many more people would be repeating it if no one countered it. It’s always worth doing even if it feels frustrating.
@picard Thanks for sharing! I will have to have a listen sometime. I love Olia and her 'Summer kitchens'. It's a really beautiful cookbook and recipes are yum! I'm looking forward to checking this out.
@dana@picard Sorry, it did not boost your reply to me.
I agree - Summer Kitchens is excellent. I really want to try to write a review some time. It was quite a revelation to me, Ukrainian cuisine - like, it really should be considered one of the top world cuisines. And the fact that not only is it not - but that almost nobody would even think there is such a thing in the first place - probably says quite a lot about the colonial silencing of the Ukrainian culture.
@picard just so you know, I am able to access the link. First clicking on the post takes me to a lemmy post that I could not comment on as remarked on previously but I could access the video by clicking on the link in the post.
I however am not able to process video/audio so I did not listen to it and cannot comment on the content
One finds a similar dynamic in the West’s support for Ukraine. We turn a blind eye to the fact that a domestic clique of oligarchs will likely emerge as the biggest winner of the Ukrainian struggle. Yet we should not be surprised if post-war Ukraine turns out similar to pre-war Ukraine, a place corrupted by oligarchy and colonized by big Western corporations that control the best land and natural resources. While we make our own sacrifices for the war effort, we fail to see that the gains will be appropriated by others, just like the drunkard who mistakes another man’s feet for his own – perhaps because, deep down, he does not want to acknowledge the truth.
Interesting article overall but disagree with the conclusion that we need to oppose the “left-right populism”.
I think by that he means the Tankies that see everything in a black and white ‘NATO bad, everything that opposes NATO good, including Russia’ kind of left wing populism, and the ‘Russia is good old capitalist oligarchy theocratic fascism just like we want to do here so we should support them’ right wing populism. From what I’ve heard I think Zizek is probably a lot more authoritarian than me (an anarchist, and a leftist), but if he has enough sense to oppose Tankies then I grudgingly accept him as a temporary ally in the fight against Russia.
I do have some criticisms about how inevitable he portrays this stuff - I’m not sure we can describe any outcome as being ‘factually’ more likely, considering we don’t even know when the war will end nor what shape the peace will take. And the idea that Ukraine will simultaneously be taken over by a clique of oligarchs and western corporations seems a little contradictory - are they oligarchs or not?
(And maybe an interesting observation that he describes the second world war as having one aggressor when it started, when in fact there were two - then as now, far right and far left were closely linked)
But in general he’s right that the peace needs considering carefully, not only the war. In any war there is always a risk of what will come after - but these discussions absolutely need to be carried out by Ukrainians, for Ukrainians.
And he’s also spot on about the need to fight the extremists at both ends of the spectrum - all extremists need opposing. I’ve been so disappointed by so many on the left who claim to fight for the rights of working people, but only when it suits them. Like, really quite disheartened when people I previously respected turned out to be supportive of genocide 🙁
Okay, will bear in mind. These are reddit style link posts. But if they don’t even show up in Calckey (do they in mastodon? Anyone know?) then it will make it harder to boost and share. Technically we could link the lemmy post directly in a calckey/mastodon toot, but that kind of defeats the point… blobcat, notlikethiscry
The first photo is what showed up in my home timeline (I have followed Stop Russian Colonialist Aggression)
The second photo is where clicking on the main link led to, it opens in a new tab taking me to a new space (I have my browser set to open clicked links in new tabs)
The review that it leads to has links in it and they show in a different color and can be linked.
I run Linux Mint 21 and use Firefox and am on an account in Mastodon running a different base code with an add name that I cannot remember right now (brain fog issue) but if necessary I can do the research. (just found it, glich-soc)
@I_Like_Books@toni@dana Somewhat annoyingly, pictures attached when you reply in Mastodon do not show up here in Lemmy either. And I'm unable to upload any pictures in Lemmy - get a json error.
But I see your pictures in Mastodon when this group boosted it (strange), and confirm same for me - my review post and Dana's podcast post both appeared in my feed boosted by the group. Don't know about Calckey, instance having major slowdowns so not checking much in the evenings.
@I_Like_Books@toni@dana Followed the group in Akkoma so will report on there next time a post is added with URL - my understanding is old posts do not get populated when first followed, or something, so need to wait for a new one with URL.
Oh and still can't reply to most posts in Lemmy, hence here from Mastodon.
@I_Like_Books@toni@dana Sorry, I meant when I reply using my Lemmy account. In theory you don't need one to reply - like we just did now from Mastodon. But if you want to make longer replies or for other reasons you might use one. The group should boost any replies, and you can then boost those in Mastodon to spread if you want. I think this whole thing is kind of a work in progress though - in general we're not used to working with software with so many quirks, but we'll get there 😊
@picard@I_Like_Books@toni@dana I definitely CAN reply in #Lemmy, only not to replies made in #Calckey or #Mastodon, because for some reason lemmy just spins forever and never posts the reply in those cases. But it definitely works fine replying to the original lemmy post, and to replies made in lemmy.
@toni@I_Like_Books@toni@dana Oh well spotted - yes I think that's what is happening for me too, couldn't figure out why some replies with my Lemmy account worked and some didn't...
