Hey just as a tip if you haven’t seen it. His video with ContraPoints is really good:)

figaro,

I have seen it! It was fantastic!

OnlineAccount150, in I've been watching a lot of HeathyGamerGG lately. Is he good?

I hadn’t heard of him until I recently watched a discussion he did (can also be watched without YouTube’s ads here), with a guy whose work I’ve been looking at. The guy in question is called Dr Mark Horowitz and he’s a training psychiatrist, and I think he passed med school and he did a PhD.

Anyway, a lot of this guy’s work is looking at withdrawal symptoms from antidepressants, and they talk about that. E.g. how withdrawals can be pretty severe for a lot of people, especially people who have been on them for years. Some people can take a year or more to come off antidepressants, slowly reducing the dose over that time.

Yes this community is about therapy, and antidepressants are a tangential topic. But still related to therapy and mental health topics. Perhaps the video I linked to is not of interest to you, fair enough if so. I found it interesting because I have tried different solutions for my own mental health, including counselling, and antidepressants. It’s interesting to find out more about antidepressants and potentially other solutions for mental health problems.

BackOnMyBS, in Anyone here trained in EMDR?
@BackOnMyBS@lemmy.world avatar

Nope, but I start EMDR soon at the advice of my autism therapist and the trauma therapist I was referred to. Apparently, I have A LOT of trauma to overcome which would make prolonged exposure too lengthy and difficult since I also throw up whenever I talk about it. CPT was also deemed not the best option because I🌈AM🌈AUTISM and have difficulties in identifying emotions and social situations like allistics.

I’m excited to move past all this bs that’s holding me back, so thank y’all for what you do! I imagine that working with trauma is incredibly difficult since you have to hear actual horror stories from people and see the impact it has on them. On the other hand, you get to see them overcome it and embrace life again. Hopefully, you guys make sure to take care of yourselves as well, and keep the toxic people that like to prey on helpers far away from you. ❤️

I’m so excited for you to start EMDR! I really hope it helps, it’s such a great modality, and I’ve seen it do amazing things. Thank you for appreciating what we do - it is difficult work, but it’s very rewarding. And yes, I have to take great care not to get overwhelmed and get secondary PTSD or burnout. But again, it’s all worth it in the end when I see someone free of emotional pain. Best of luck to you in your journey!

TimewornTraveler, in Opinions on Hypnotherapy

4 months late but my clinical supervisor had training in hypnotherapy, though she said she didn’t get to practice it as often as she’d have liked. It can be a useful tool! Like any tool, you’ll need more than one to build a house. The most important thing about hypnosis is the will to believe. You gotta be willing to cede control and let things happen in order to fully participate. Your readiness in that aspect will likely help determine results.

TimewornTraveler, in I've been watching a lot of HeathyGamerGG lately. Is he good?

He’s okay! He fills an important niche and has a lot of good info. The main caveat I’d want to encourage considering when watching his content is to just consider his perspective. He’s a medical doctor first, and he’s had whatever list of experiences he’s had. He speaks with authority on many things and comes from a place of expertise, but even within those fields there will be disagreements. So I’d mainly watch out for his prescriptive judgments.

In particular, his stance on cannabis could use more nuance. He admittedly has never used it, so a lot of his concerns and hesitancy are based on whatever other data might inform his perspective. Cannabis research is severely lacking and there’s a lot we don’t know about it. Given his audience, he really does need to broadcast caution with it, as it is still a psychotropic drug and can still contribute to mental health issues in certain cases. And he goes pretty hard on that front, encouraging people to beware of the effects of it. It’s just disappointing when his conclusion always seems to be abstinence.

He recently dropped a new video saying that “discipline is an emotion” which seems like a pretty dubious claim. I’d like to rewatch it to understand the science behind it better but it seemed like a sort of sensationalist claim that discussed the emotional experience of “resoluteness” and ways to cultivate that experience. It seems interesting and useful, but definitely something to take with a grain of salt, not as gospel!

TLDR: Good content creator, well-informed doctor, has his own biases and perspectives, learn & listen but question before following. I recommend him to other clinicians whenever they’re struggling with a young male client.

figaro,

Awesome, thank you for your perspective on this! That is along the lines of what I have been thinking as well.

I feel like he has a lot of things right - young men generally seem to be pretty lost right now, and most mental health professionals don’t really understand what their lives are often like. He’s helping an underserved population in a really good way.

figaro, in Anyone here trained in EMDR?

This is the second time I’ve heard about this in a week. I’d be interested in more info!

figaro, in Zoom?

Personally I wouldn’t touch zoom with a 100 foot pole for tele-therapy. I’m just waiting for there to be some kind of major leak and an “oops all these private conversations got leaked, sorryyyy”

twosalad, in Very Affordable Therapy

Just wanted to share a tip: I found my current therapist through Open Path’s search engine and by running their name online, found them listed on Psychology Today as well. Same rates as Open Path without having to pay for a membership fee.

quixotic120, in Zoom?

Fwiw zoom has posted a response denying they use any meeting user data to train models

blog.zoom.us/zooms-term-service-ai/

How trustworthy this is remains to be seen. I pay them for a BAA so while I’m not a lawyer I’m pretty sure if they do this it would be a contract violation and they could be sued by any healthcare worker that pays them for hipaa compliant zoom

VubDapple, in How do therapists avoid feelings of burnout?

Excellent answers offered so far. I’ll rephrase the question: what conditions lend themselves to burnout?

Overworking is one. I like to see about 25 to 30 clients per week; more than that is too much.

Being careful with regard to how many really needy/suicidal folk I take on at once is another, though it’s difficult to regulate that.

Having colleagues to talk about the more challenging cases with is super helpful. I have a regular consultation group I participate with.

Administration overhead in a private practice contributes to burnout and needs to be regularly reviewed and minimized. I’ve stopped working with most insurance companies at this point because they underpay and offer too many restrictions and micro-management to be worth it.

You’ve got to keep the rest of your life in order so that other people’s problems don’t compound on top of your own. That means self-care and honoring and maintaining one’s relationships. If I’m feeling loved and loving in my personal life I’m much more able to be a good therapeutic presence for my clients.

It helps tremendously to stay mindful with regard to what is happening in the therapy room. Some clients present as hopeless. Others get angry or upset with you. Others want so much to please you that they tell you they’re doing well when that isn’t the case. Still others can’t seem to make progress even though they want to. It’s so easy to take this sort of thing personally but that is a mistake. Its all just behavior you can reflect back to them so as to stimulate the client’s own mindfulness. Of course, all the self-care and social support is what makes my own mindfulness possible.

This is the best answer, it encompasses almost everything. I would just add that my own therapy and then peer supervision/consultation are super helpful. I also find that you must have friends who aren’t therapists (in addition to the ones who are). You need to be able to talk about “normal” things and not just work/therapy theory.

Wickedlucky214, in How do therapists avoid feelings of burnout?

Self-care, self-care, self-care.

Noedel, in How do therapists avoid feelings of burnout?

My wife is a therapist. Most therapists get something called peer supervision, which is basically therapy for therapists. My wife sees about 20 clients a week and has one or two hours of supervision a week.

She also has to practice what she preaches. Mindfulness, meditation, sports. All the things you’d do to feel physically and mentally fit.

AFLYINTOASTER, in How do therapists avoid feelings of burnout?

Pick a door:

  1. They get their own therapist
  2. They don’t avoid feelings of burnout
  3. They apply their practice to themselves
  4. They leave their sessions at the door
  5. Alcohol

Feel free to pick multiple doors, live your best.

figaro, in How to Make the Most of Your Therapy Sessions

For me, I think having a topic in mind is the best thing to do. Your therapist isn't a mind reader 😂.

Be willing to open up when you feel comfortable. Avoid one word responses if you can. Allow yourself to be introspective. Stopping to think about your responses is also a great idea.

Incrediblely useful information, thank you.
