Did we really think that this would be anything other than a complete disaster. The money would have been better spent on upgrading and improving what we have in place and maybe even dare I say it subsidising rail fares to get the cost down?
Britain is a deeply conservative country. We don’t like change, and construction means change.
In Bristol, our mayor has been pushing a subway network for years, given that our buses are horrendous, and traffic makes travelling to the centre of Bristol take an hour, easy. It’s been met with almost universal hate, because people see it as too expensive.
We couldn’t build a stadium, an arena, barely built a mall, and we regularly close venues down when gentrification sweeps in and people don’t like living near noise. It’s a common story all over the UK, because we’re just adverse to change.
Average construction costs have escalated by 50% since 2021. This affects every single construction project globally, whether it be a new house or an airport.
Governments are delusional if they are unaware of this or believe they can find cost savings by further delaying projects. For instance, we are on track for another 8% cost escalation this year.
