What do you guys think about the "retro" part of the Indie Web?

I have been exploring webrings a lot lately to find content for the community and stumbled upon tons and tons of websites of the "retro" type, like this one or this one, and I have to say I'm not exactly fond of them. Looks weird, uses very small fonts, doesn't scale in any way so viewing it on any monitor than that of the person who made it is an absolute pain. I know people make their website look like that on purpose to give it the vibe of "the old days" but applying bad practices is just wild to me

So, what's /c/weblogs's opinion about such sites?

RaccoonBall,

doesn’t scale in any way so viewing it on any monitor than that of the person who made it is an absolute pain

Have you tried ctrl + mousewheel?

Both sites scale for me that way, though I also find them usable as-is.

(ctrl+0 to reset zoom by the way)

I mean, who am I to judge?

I like them as “art projects”, they can also be fun challenges (“how can we make this old style accessible/responsive, without it losing it’s character?”).

But I wouldn’t personally put content (e.g. blog posts) that I would like have seen by a larger audience on such a retro website.

darthfabulous42069,

Sites like that could easily be made more accessible by Web 2.0 standards but fuck-all if anybody could be assed to try.

Zeus,

i like it

i think the reason most people do things like that is nostalgia; and it's hard to create the feeling of the web you're nostalgic for, without also creating the look of the web you're nostalgic for. it's definitely possible, but a lot of people won't

it's also an expression of personality — it's a personal site after all, if you're making your own site, make it a reflection of yourself — and a rebellion against "modern" graphic design trends (which i hate), where everything looks corporate, cold, clean, and characterless. they offend nobody, but please nobody

a site like webpage1990colourised, pleurodelinae, bytemoth, drakul78, or cyborgcatboys is going to put a lot of people off, but many others will love it. i like the idea of that kind of interesting, individualised site creation

i personally try to split the difference, make a garish site with flashy gifs, but use modern web practices like responsive design (and i've noticed others like solinus do similar things)
