I thought it would be interesting to do a few more pioneering hatchbacks, so today we’re looking at the Renault.4, which was first introduced in 1961. Some people say this is a small estate rather than a hatchback; I think it can be argued either way. I snapped this late model at the #BremenClassicMotorShow in 2014. I think the modern plastic exterior trim detracts somewhat from the R4’s original look.
Yesterday I featured Peugeot’s legendary 1965 ‘monoposto’ record-breaker (left). Today, the car upon which it was based, the 404 Cabriolet (right), snapped at the #BremenClassicMotorShow in 2014. Both cars have nice ‘Bleu de France’ paintwork. By the way, if you think that the 404 in its various forms bears more than a passing resemblance to certain BMC, Fiat and Lancia models of the time, you are right. The third car @Pierrette mentioned from her childhood was a Veronese green Volkswagen Beetle. I tried hard to establish what precise shade that is, but opinions seem to vary! I hope these examples get close but if I’ve missed the target colourwise, I hope people will still appreciate these lovely Volkswagens anyway. Left, a closed Brezel (pretzel) rear window Beetle, and on the right, a convertible - both photos taken at #TechnoClassica in 2014. #VW#Volkswagen#WeirdCarMastodon#davidsdailycar
