While studying with the hermit Finnéces/Finegas was left to watch the salmon of wisdom turning on a spit. But the salmon splattered onto Finn’s thumb, and he stuck it in his mouth to salve the pain. Thus did Finn gain all the salmon’s wisdom. From then on, all he had to do was suck on his thumb and he would enter an altered, visionary state in which he could see past, present, and future. As all the names of the characters in this story are connected, the salmon has been seen as a triplication or intensification of Finn himself.

: is depicted as a magical, benevolent giant. In a Gaelic tale, Fionn and the Buggane (a Manx huge ogre-like creature) fought at Kirk Christ Rushen. As Finn fled across the sea, the buggane tore out one of its own teeth and hit Fionn with it. The tooth fell into the water and became a chicken rock, and Fionn cursed the tooth and explained why it was a danger to sailors.

: The Abbey Lubber haunted the wine cellar of any British abbey where lazy monks were overfond of drink. The best known was a spectral horse who dressed in a monkish robe and lived in a monastery under the name of Friar Rush. The wealthy and dissolute prior attempted to chastise the alleged friar for behavior more alcoholic than was welcome in that liberal establishment, but the Abbey Lubber assumed his real form and vanished, leaving the monks both frightened and chastened.

#Finnéces was eager to gain all the knowledge that the Salmon of Wisdom had from eating hazelnuts. For seven years the #druid had been waiting for just the right moment to gain the wisdom that the salmon held within itself. When the time was right, Finnéces/Finegas caught the fish, who came to his line as though by prearrangement.
The old druid set the fish to cook, leaving the boy #Fionn mac Cumhaill to watch it and warning him not to touch it or taste it. But the salmon sizzled and spattered onto Fionn’s thumb, which he stuck into his mouth to ease the pain. Immediately wisdom flooded him—the very wisdom that Finnéces had been hoping to attain.
