If you could travel out to the Andromeda Galaxy and look back at the Milky Way, what would you see? Something like this. I created this composite image from an actual photo of Andromeda (mirrored) and astronomers' best guess as to what the Milky Way looks like (a barred spiral not quite as large as Andromeda). And yes, this image has something to do with my new book, ! If you'd like a 4480x2800 version for wallpaper, I put a copy on my website: https://douglasphillipsbooks.com/gallery

As Captain Zeeno (a Chitza scout ship commander) might say, "Aw hell, even an asteroid miner can pop off a few 4-D bubbles. Purple, pink, violet... fuchsia. Naw, we don't mess with that crap. Quality 4-D is always magenta. Solid. Stable. Lasts a long time."

Important stuff to remember for intergalactic travel. It's also the answer to a question I asked a few days ago. In the , bubbles of four-dimensional space come in multiple colors, from dark purples to hot pinks (see Quantum Void). But magenta is special, reflecting a fine tuning of dimensional technology. Surprisingly, magenta also appears in nature. Check out this photo of the Trifid Nebula embedded into the Scutum-Centaurus arm, 1.3 kiloparsecs from Earth (we view it in the constellation Sagittarius). Maybe we should go there and find out what's going on?

One week to go until releases on Kindle e-book (you can get the paperback now)! A major theme of this book is vast size of our universe, so this post preps you with a word you'll see a lot: parsec.
What is a parsec? It’s short for “parallax arc second” and is the unit of distance preferred by astronomers (equal to 3.26 light-years). Sirius is 2.6 parsecs from Earth. The Andromeda galaxy, 765 kiloparsecs. Why use parsecs? 1. It's handy; a good unit for big distances. 2. Light-years tend to confuse speed or time with distance (the Kessel Run notwithstanding).

(Book 5 in the ) releases July 17! It's a sci-fi adventure featuring two alien species: Chitzas (who you met in book 4), and a new species, the Afeesh Tm, whose name is regularly autocorrected to Afeesh™. Ugh. I hate smart software. It tries so hard to please, but it's like asking your dog to make dinner reservations--you'll end up at a table in the alley beside the dumpster.

Barbie doesn’t have a lock on pink, but in , we call it magenta! In fact, the word “magenta” appears 26 times in the book, and I bet a few sharp-minded readers of the know why.
