Today's theme for @neurothing's #ThursdayFiveList, the last one of this year, is #TheSongOfYourYear, five songs that were important to you this year 🎶
I thought about this topic for a while and couldn't decide on just five songs. Instead, I narrowed it down and focused on fediverse artists that came to my attention this year. Some great songs... and I still couldn't leave it at five 😊
Many thanks to @neurothing for hosting the #ThursdayFiveList this year! It’s a great idea to wrap this up with our five favourite songs of the year #TheSongOfYourYear
My first pick is this blistering collaboration between Orbital and The Sleaford Mods, with Dirty Rat
This might be an ideal tag for songs that mean something profound to me. Except, alas, I'm a very simple person and personal symbolism in music is too high-brow for me. The music in my life is all about how it makes me feel, and that's all.
So, here's five songs (that I've already mentioned a lot this year) that created profound emotional reactions in me. Happily, our host has said it's okay to repeat songs! And I'll begin with a song that I've talked about a lot in the past couple of months.
Niecy Blues - U Care https://youtu.be/YCEcWN5a4sU
(coming from a soul and gospel root, then pushing through ambient electronica and trip hop influences, mixing in samples, making a record that sounds unlike anything else)
Lau Nau - April https://youtu.be/A1fNAt8HvTQ
(from the loveliest-sounding album I heard this year. I say 'loveliest-sounding' because it's all in Finnish and the lyrics could be extremely violent for all I know. But it sounds gorgeous.)
Lana Del Rey - Did You Know There's A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd https://youtu.be/IuY54A3bOmg
(I really would not have expected to get to the end of this year with a Lana Del Rey record as one of my favourite albums of the year. But it's so, so good. Just goes to show that great music isn't always where you'd expect to find it.)
Lankum - Go Dig My Grave https://youtu.be/qhqpQiXnFx0
(I think it's entirely right and reasonable to include a second song from a band fronted by Radie Peat. What a year she's had.)
