In the first of 3 trains (not counting the metro to/from train stations) for my trip home. Arrival in Paris is scheduled 14.5 hours from now. Let's see if having to repurchase from Deutsche Bahn tickets I had already bougt from SNCF but forgotten at home and canceling the first ones is the extent of the adventurousness of this trip... #noFlight#jagStannarPåMarken
Finally found out by looking up tickets from the next stop to my final destination that I now officially have less than half an hour to get off the train, buy food, eat food, get on the next train.
The general consensus is that people on board this train are happy they're not flying but they wish the Deutsche Bahn wouldn't make it so hard on them to do the right thing.
Bought a Butterbretzel at a food stall between the platform where my first train arrived and the one where my second train departed from (there was no line, first thing I thought of). Ate it while walking up and down the platform among people waiting for 3 delayed trains trying to figure out where my car would be (started the wrong way because my brain is... doing its best). More bridges over water to look at. My body is letting me know I'm not supposed to do that. #noFlight#jagStannarPåMarken
Now a door is defective and so of course we're accumulating more delay. Still plenty of time to eat more than a bretzel and get on the last train of my trip... for now.
Currently baking in the sun on the platform waiting for my next train (for the few available seats are not in the shade), listening to an announcement that drumrolls jazz hands sparkles flying everywhere
...
it is late.
This could have been so much smoother if the Deutsche Bahn wasn't so terrible, which makes me angry – when will we stop underfunding what are in effect public services?
And I'm grateful that I speak German and am familiar with German train stations and the Deutsche Fucking Bahn, because that certainly made it much easier.
The sun is shining, the night train arrived 15 minutes early, someone on the train recommended an anarchist locale and I'm sitting in the sun waiting for breakfast. Still happy I did not fly, still thinking there's a lot that could be done to improve train travel. #noFlight#jagStannarPåMarken
Train trip update: Deutsche Bahn still sucks but I am still seated at the same seat, my car is quiet, the train I'm in was further delayed but is still scheduled to arrive at my destination early enough for me to find the bassoonist, have food (if the knots in my stomach untie) and catch the night train. I have drunk water, used the bathroom, washed my hands with water and soap (not possible in this morning's train) and have charged my laptop and phone. #noFlight#jagStannarPåMarken
24 hour train trip, starting now. 1500km across 5 European countries, including strategically chosen stops for lunch and dinner. Imagine if it was 300km/h high speed trains all the way though... #notFlying#jagStannarPåMarken
