confession:

me "resisting temptation" to upgrade to Fedora 40 early wasn't even really that. it was more that i was super distracted by streaming again + starting to Vtube that I didn't even realize Fedora 40 was coming out when it did until I got notified of build errors for Zeliblue

with the release of Fedora 40, I've also updated davincibox to it

Fedora 40 also means Mesa 24, so I've added rusticl as an opt-in option for testing: https://github.com/zelikos/davincibox?tab=readme-ov-file#amd

Working nicely on my PC so far (using an AMD RX 6600XT), but more testers, especially any using older AMD cards, would be very welcome, as I'd ideally like rusticl to be the default for non-Nvidia users due to ROCm being problematic

I finally did it

I resisted temptation

I didn't upgrade to the new Fedora release before it was out of beta

started my first playthrough of Control a couple days ago, after finishing up Alan Wake and Alan Wake's American Nightmare earlier this week

having now watched one of Digital Foundry's videos on it with raytracing stuff, I have to say: while it does look even better with RT enabled, it still looks incredible without, and runs really well

and that's all on top of it being super fun to play with a good story. would recommend

finally started playing through Alan Wake this past week, after it had sat in my Steam Library for an actual decade

even considering it's the original PC release and not the remaster, it's so good and I wish I'd played it sooner. I finished my first playthrough on stream yesterday, and already started a second run on Nightmare difficulty to try getting collectibles I missed

really looking forward to playing American Nightmare, Control, and eventually Alan Wake 2 as well

"actual decade" not even an exaggeration. i took this screenshot before I started up the playthrough; I guess I had briefly launched it back in 2013 for...some reason, but didn't actually play through

unfortunately, I wasn't able to get a clear picture of it, but the path of totality for the eclipse went through my area, so I got to see it first-hand. was super cool

since there's a GNOME initiative for Inter now (https://gitlab.gnome.org/Teams/Design/initiatives/-/issues/152), I wanted to take a closer look at it

one known issue with default Inter is that I and l look the same, so a word like "Illness" looks...weird. Inter does have options for disambiguation, though

1: default Inter
2: "cv08": upper-case i with serif
3: "cv05": lower-case L with tail
4: "zero": slashed zero

there's also a "ss02", which is an all-in-one of the above

imo, serif upper-case i looks odd in Inter

3 + 4 are good

A note titled "Font testing". The English alphabet is typed out in both upper and lower case, followed by the digits 1 through 9 and the respective symbols tied to them on an ANSI keyboard. After that is the sentence "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog," one that includes every letter of the English alphabet. A section below the previous has comparisons for characters that may be similar in appearance: - 0 and upper-case O - Upper-case i and lower-case l - Lower-case q and g In this image, Inter is displayed with its "cv08" feature, which changes upper-case i to a serif style to disambiguate it from lower-case l.

i set up an Action Layer specifically for the Air Force One GATE at the Gold Saucer, with gyro for mouse aim and R1 set to mouse click because that's way more accurate than aiming with a thumbstick

is it excessive? probably. could I just use my mouse for AF1 instead? yes

totally worth tho

Akzel,
@Akzel@mastodon.online avatar

and no I don't do GATEs nearly often enough to get a ton of use out of this

still totally worth

so my newer DualSense controller: left stick drifts, temporary fixes don't last long. so not great for anything I need really precise movement in

older DualSense that i've been using again recently as a result: the right stick drifts. not yet quite as badly as the left stick on the newer DualSense, but still makes FPS games awkward, especially with Flick Stick

not quite sure which is more annoying tbh. newer DualSense's d-pad does feel way better, though...

@Akzel@mastodon.online avatar

I've spent more time over the past few days using gyro + flick stick in various games, and, if I hadn't already convinced myself before, I definitely have now that gyro on by default for camera + flick stick to snap to cardinal directions quickly is fantastic in like any game with manual camera control

for actually calibrating them in Steam Input, https://www.mouse-sensitivity.com/ is a great tool to help with that (tho I've already had a few games it wasn't accurate for)

@Akzel@mastodon.online avatar

ok not an FPS (unless you play as Deathslinger, i guess), but gyro + flick stick works pretty well on killer in DBD, too

Akzel,
@Akzel@mastodon.online avatar

side note: I titled the action set here "Killer" (with "Default" being normal gamepad bindings, since this was mostly for testing), but I basically copied all the not-right-thumbstick bindings from my Steam Controller config, which was done with survivor in mind

so...I tried a match on survivor with this config on the DualSense, too. gyro + flick stick actually works nice there, too, but I do prefer analog movement, and DbD does not handle mixed controller & KBM input well

@Akzel@mastodon.online avatar

as part of what started as Steam Controller testing, and then also became testing Steam Input on a DualSense, I fired up Left 4 Dead 2 for the first time in...going by my achievements, 10 years

shouldn't be a surprise since it is a Valve game, but holy f it's a great example of how to do good Steam Input support in games. amazing how good it feels to play on a controller with gyro

Akzel,
@Akzel@mastodon.online avatar

the official config does do "Always Enabled" for the gyro, and...on a DualSense, I think that's fine, actually. there is a "Recenter Camera" binding, but I'll probably tweak it to disable the gyro on trackpad touch too. other than that, I liked having Always Enabled moreso than I expected. works very well in an FPS

Akzel,
@Akzel@mastodon.online avatar

update: I've now also tried "Always Enabled" for gyro, with trackpad touch set to turn it off, in Payday 2, and...yeah, I'm convinced now that having the gyro on by default with a "touch to turn off" binding, instead of the inverse that I used to do, is definitely the way to go in FPS games

two things with the Steam Controller I never really tried/got the hang of before:

  1. Use the left touchpad for movement, not as a d-pad
  2. Gyro-only camera control

as of last night and today, I've started experimenting with doing both of those. #2 I wish I'd done sooner because it actually feels way better than trying to do both trackpad and gyro together

as for #1, so far:

  • still feels a bit weird in FFXIV
  • works great in Vampire Survivors, DBD, PlateUp, and even Elden Ring
Akzel,
@Akzel@mastodon.online avatar

after a bit more testing, in GTAV now because of the gameplay variety,

if I only had the Steam Controller and no other options, I'd be satisfied (tho I'd prefer that the joystick were instead a d-pad). I'd say I even prefer it over a Switch Pro Controller since the right trackpad is really convenient for activating gyro

the DualSense tho, despite the issues I've mentioned,

  • has a d-pad
  • the joysticks feel great
  • basically all of its buttons + triggers, and even its gyro: way better than SC
Akzel,
@Akzel@mastodon.online avatar

so in GTAV specifically:

  • Left trackpad on Steam Controller does actually work pretty well for movement and driving...but I'm way more precise with the latter on the DualSense
  • navigating menus is a lot nicer with an actual d-pad
  • having both a trackpad and a right thumbstick is helpful here too
  • Shooting guns...I think I even prefer that on the DualSense because the gyro feels that much better than the SC's, even considering the less convenient activation
