Astaroth,

great. I tried to play the original a few years ago but I didn’t manage to get it to run

Astaroth,

usually I just do it for the funzies but sometimes I do want to see if there’s other takes

Astaroth,

yeah I don’t use it often either. That’s why I didn’t realize it wasn’t there until after I browsed some political subs

Astaroth,

great

Astaroth,

Sure you meant Parmesan cheese and not semolina flour?

Astaroth,

I think some way to temporarily exclude/include which communities’ feed show up would be ideal.

And maybe some way to tag or group up communities into collections.

Dodging in Skyrim AE with Directional Double-Tap?

Is there a mod out right now that supports dodging by double-tapping the directional move keys that works in Skyrim AE? This is the behavior from the classic TK Dodge mod, but my understanding is that this doesn’t work in AE. The replacement mod, TK Dodge RE, has not gotten around to re-instituting this option. I’ve got a...

Astaroth,

iirc there’s a few mods but I’ve always used TK Dodge and don’t remember what the other ones are called

Astaroth,

Seems like I have to start looking into another alternative to Reddit yet again if Lemmy won’t defederate

Astaroth,

but don’t I have to make a new account? or can I migrate my account somehow?

Astaroth,

I use Fish and it’s super convenient. To be honest I don’t think I could ever use the terminal if I had to just use Bash.

Anyone playing Ghost Trick?

I’m playing it for the first time. It feels super original and refreshing. I know it’s trite to say this now but I feel like you really don’t get many games like this any more. They’ve already announced ports of the Apollo games, does that mean the two Investigations games are the only two remaining to come across?

Astaroth,

I played the old DS one many years ago, it’s a great game, I’d definitely recommend it if you haven’t played it.

With that said I personally won’t play the remake even though it looks really good, since while the graphical improvements are a plus, at the end of the day it’s still a puzzle and story game so I don’t see how I would get any replay value out of it since I already played it.

Astaroth,

Since the whole point of Lemmy/Fediverse/Whatever is that there's multiple independent instances, obviously each instance would have to ban it for themselves.

If the creators of Lemmy could control the other instances then eventually we'd just get another Reddit

Well maybe they could include some stuff in the source code as a reference to make it easier for other instances, but at the end of the day the creators of Lemmy should not be able to force independent instances to do anything

As a first timer, please could I have some help?

Mainly got into this because I wanted to try out the new isle of man tt sim. went to www.yasdl.com and found it. Installed all of the parts but however I attempt to open them (winrar, then extracting the files (winrar, then using ultraiso, then using the setup.exe within, it always says that it isnt a Freearc archive/it's...

Astaroth,

After you have a torrent client, like qBittorrent, you should be able to click on "magnet links" on torrent sites, and then the web browser will automatically ask if you want to open the magnet link with qBittorrent.

For me the same thing happens, except I'm using one called Transmission.

Anyway, after that you might have to choose to which directory/folder it gets downloaded if it's your first time.

Then it will start downloading. Of course how fast it's downloading depends on the number of Seeders and Leechers.

Seeders are people with the files who are allowing others to download it from them, if there's no seeders then you won't be downloading anything.

Astaroth,

Proton? Why are you using Proton? Does qBittorrent only have a Windows version? In that case don't use qBittorrent, or if it has a Linux version (I assume you're on Linux since you're using Proton) get that one.

If you're on Linux, at least Arch Linux like me (but I assume most OSes will have it), you can use the transmission-qt package.

There's also a gtk version.

Anyway I've never used a VPN for torrents and never had a problem, but it probably depends on where you live and your ISP. Also I should note that I don't have a static IP address, which means every time I start my PC I'm getting a new IP, which probably doesn't hurt.

Though obviously the ISP always knows what my IP address is, so if they do have a problem with it then I would probably need to use a VPN.

Edit: It seems yt-dlp was at some point moved from AUR to Extra. I was half expecting it to happen eventually since youtube-dl stopped working about a year ago, but I never noticed it happening.

Either way, as it's a package on extra instead of AUR there's a lot less of a security concern for anyone worried about that.

Original comment:

I have yt-dlp from the AUR (Arch User Repository). youtube-dl package also exists, and it's on extra, but it stopped working about half a year ago

Astaroth, (edited )

like I said only the original youtube-dl package is in extra but it stopped working a while back.

since then I've been using the youtube-dl fork yt-dlp that OP mentioned, but it's in aur atm since it hasn't gotten as recognized as it's a fork (I assume)

Basically yt-dlp is a fork of youtube-dl, and unlike youtube-dl it's in aur instead of extra.

At least last I checked all youtube-dl forks are in aur, but you have to use yt-dlp (or maybe one of the other forks) since youtube-dl doesn't work anymore.

Astaroth,

Interesting. I'm pretty sure it was on AUR when I installed quite a while back, but looks like it's in Extra now yeah.

It does make sense though since youtube-dl hasn't been working for about a year.

I should've checked before commenting

Astaroth,

Yeah tbh I realized it's even better if the protest doesn't change anything, so more people have to migrate.

In the short term of course I would prefer to continue to just use old.reddit but long term even if the protest works Reddit will just get worse with time, so it's better to get the alternatives going before then.

A list of community-vetted learning resources for modding newcomers. If you want a beginner's guide, I invite you to start here!

Redirecting novice modders away from bad resources and towards good alternatives seems like the neighborly thing to do, as well as guiding question-askers toward the convention of using Load Order Library or Mod.watch, and Pastebin, for questions about load order or crash reports....

Astaroth,

When I learned how to use xEdit I saw this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khJWk6EUGtU

There was another video too but I don't seem to have it bookmarked.

xEdit, known as SSEEdit to Skyrim SE players

Yeah, so the thing is xEdit, SSEEdit, FO4Edit, or whatever, they're all the same. You literally just rename xEdit depending on which game you're using it for.

So when modding Skyrim Special Edition you rename it to SSEEdit

And I can't recommend xEdit enough. If you've got a lot of mods there will inevitably be mod conflicts.

With xEdit you can quickly (and fairly easily) make merged patches to combine the changes of multiple mods into a single new mod.

e.g. one of the mod might change how Potions look, another how much they cost, and a 3rd what their effects are. Normally only the mod last in the load order will have it's changes apply, but with a merged mod you can combine all the changes and resolve the conflict.

With xEdit you can also modify stuff from the game and create your own mods. There's lots of little tweaks I wanted, like changing carry weight, duration of Fortify potions, make food useful, remove salt from lots of recipes, change the player starting skill levels, etc. etc.

There's existing mods that do all those things, but if you want it to be exactly how you want it rather than how the modmaker wants it you have to tweak the numbers yourself.

With one of the scripts Automation Tools for TES5Edit adds I even made my own Perk Trees in xEdit: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/49373

It was definitely daunting and somewhat confusing in the beginning, but it was definitely worth it and I can't recommend xEdit enough.

Astaroth, (edited )

Not a mod but I think SKSE is the most important since you can't even have SkyUI without it

SkyUI

Open Cities

Alternate Start (there's multiple different ones)

moreHud

Immersive Patrols

XEdit, it's not a mod but I think it's more important than most mods since

  • it lets you make a lot of tweaks on your own
  • there's no point in having hundreds of mods if they override each other, so being able to make merged patches is critically important
