@piggo even in h264 browsers only support one specific pixel format of yuvj420. H265 has licensing costs that no one wants to pay for, Edge supports it if you pay 79p for the license on the windows store. Apple devices support it natively, I guess the cost is bundled into the premium storage cost per GB on an iPhone

H264 actually requires a license to use as well, the only reason it managed to become so widely supported is because Cisco open-sourced their encoder and paid $65,000,000 for everyone's license for 10 years, an insane reality. This was actually in 2013 I don't if they're planning on renewing it.

We're making real progress recently on getting AVC, an Open Standard, actually widely supported by a vast number of browsers and devices. So future of video codecs is not so grim.

Fun fact, when you delete a file in Linux they are moved into /bin and you need to regularly clear it out using:

rm -r /bin/*

In my opinion, decorators and syntactic sugar should not be included in any example code of beginner documentation.

Very confusing to try and grasp the basic structure of a language, only to have something entirely new and weird thrown at you in the middle of learning something else.

Frieran is a beautifully animated show, but they really cheaped out on the sound design and it’s such a shame. From this dramatic scene I recognise the following free sound effects:

  • his footsteps when running
  • the dragon’s claw pulls along the ground
  • the ground moving immediately after the above
  • rocks hitting the ground as he runs between them
  • the sound he makes when he jumps (used twice in 5 seconds)

Even the ones I don’t recognise I don’t think are very good or fit the scene very well. It’s such a shame because the animation itself is stunning.

30 seconds before this they used the infamous wind.mp3 most notable for it’s appearance in Half Life 2, like most free sound effects are.

NetworkManager out there being the only Systemd service to use capitalisation in it’s name.

Equally as inspiring as it is infuriating.

So whilst being ill in bed, I got bored and made a docker container that mimics a full Ubuntu install with SSH access that you can’t do anything inside because it’s read only. Might be fun to spin some of them up on port 22 of my home ips just to fuck with bots

Baa,
@Baa@fedi.absturztau.be avatar

@EpicKitty just be careful they don't become a gateway to other parts of your network of other containers.

Also don't forget zero-days in any aspect of the container itself, making behavior unpredictable :notlikemiya:

I got GPU pass-through in Qemu working with Looking Glass and my old GTX 1070. The only hard part was I needed to blacklist ALL the NVIDIA and Nouveau drivers before connecting the second GPU because GNOME and Ubuntu were NOT happy. While I could get to the login screen but not actually log in. I couldn’t even drop to shell it would just freeze, although I found out that I could actually still input commands I just had to do it blind haha.

The final caveat was the GPU won’t render until it’s connected to a monitor, so I attached a spare cable to a spare port on one of my monitors. The rest was just following the Looking Glass docs.

Wish my GPUs had a little more physical clearance for airflow though :ablobsweats:

Using an iPad has truly been one of my worst experiences with technology so far.

In order to install one free app, I had to create one account, my full name, address, a mobile number, enter a 2-factor authentication code 3 times.

Every single app is trash pretending to be free but locking all features behind a subscription service, even the most basic of features I needed require more money. Truly, if the Play Store is the king of stealing your data, the App Store is the king of stealing your money.

Thought this was meant to be the good option for the tech illiterate but it’s just another pit-hole of a awful eco-system.
