If you don’t need the “advanced” features of VLC’s desktop app, the UWP app is beautiful and modern looking, while also providing that "opens ALL the formats" VLC UX.
I’ve been buying physical media (DVDs, BluRay) and ripping them with MakeMKV + Encoding them with HandBrake and use my cloud storage + a mix of Kodi and Infuse Pro to stream my shows.
I’ll rip a thousand DVDs before I let this company physical media die!
My conservative father listens to some dude called “Creed Fisher”; the dude literally sings about people who don’t have good ol’ fashion American Patronism and that he’ll “kick their ass” for not having it. It is so cringy.
FWIW: I don’t identify with conservatives or liberals.
It’s a shame because if you look at the history of Roku, it was founded with technology and ease of access in mind. Unfortunately, like many things, advertising and invading a users privacy is the “best” route for these companies to become profitable.
Google is a perfect example of this, especially after Eric Schmidt and the introduction of Google accounts.
I have heard about putting my roku on another submet but i don’t know how to do this. Any thoughts 🤔
I believe that would rely on the modem settings… If you buy a router (eero, Google WiFi, etc.) and connect it to the Ethernet port, you could create a separate network and your modem would see your router as a single device. I have T-Mobile Internet but don’t trust them with my data, so in conjunction with the above, I have all my network traffic pointed towards AdGuard DNS (Personal Plan)(they have a free version that works well, but you can’t customize it).
Of all the streaming devices you can purchase, I’d argue Roku is the most privacy invasive: https://foundation.mozilla.org/en/privacynotincluded/roku-streaming-sticks/
If you subscribe to RSS feeds that sometimes due ads in the form of articles (looking at you daringfireball); services like SiftRSS let you use Regex to filter out titles that match (i.e., sponsor, sponsorship) so you only get organic content.
I found this out last month from my stepmother who is a pharmacist… I stopped it a few months prior to learning this, but knowing this now, I’ll use an alternative like Cetirizine/Zyrtec.
