what's the difference between kbin and lemmy? if i go here kbin isn't on the list, so is kbin like it's own thing? still kinda trying to figure this out lol
Kbin and Lemmy are entirely different projects, but they are both designed to be similar to Reddit and they are both connected part of the “fediverse”, meaning you can subscribe to and interact communities/magazines from other instances besides the one your account is on, and even between each other. (So, you can subscribe to Lemmy communities from Kbin and Kbin magazines from Lemmy.) It’s all kind of nuts really, in a good way.
Right now, Kbin seems to have fewer instances than Lemmy. So the magazines are more concentrated on the ones that do exist, but it might be a bit bogged down with new users, especially the flagship instance kbin.social. There are many Lemmy instances and the communities are spread out, so you are likely to be hopping around between instances to find all the communities you want (which is what it’s designed to do, after all) rather than find everything locally on one instance.
