The Ascent has so much world-building and unique characters that I’m surprised it isn’t based on an existing book series, anime, or TTRPG. Yet it’s the debut game from a studio with 12 people. That’s crazy to me....
This video explains the history of The Net using various Cyberpunk rulebooks. So it isn’t specific to Cyberpunk 2077. But as someone who never played the Cyberpunk TTRPG or read any of the rulebooks, it’s nice to get some context for the things happening in Cyberpunk 2077....
Tokyo Ghost is about a cyberpunk world where most people are addicted to the internet and reality TV. The main character’s boyfriend is so addicted he can barely talk. But the two of them are offered a job that involves going to the one last nature preserve on earth, Tokyo. The main character thinks this will be a great...
Yeah, Signalis has that fixed camera that reminds me of old Resident Evil games but i wasn’t sure if it actually goes horror. I haven’t played it either.
2047: Virtual Revolution is about a cyberpunk world where 75% of humanity spends all their time in virtual reality. A group of terrorists are killing people who are logged in, so a giant corporation hires a trench-coat wearing private investigator to put a stop to it....
This video is only 4 minutes long but it’s still tough to watch the whole thing. It’s really bad. But it’s also what cyberpunk looked like in the late 80s/early 90s.
I know the Watch_Dogs series has always received mediocre scores and reviews, but I’ve always enjoyed them. Sure, hacking a CCTV camera by looking at it from another CCTV camera makes no sense, but hacking is never realistic in movies or video games. At least this series makes hacking fun without being a bunch of mini-games....
Sorry, I wasn’t trying to make some grand deconstruction of his character’s archetype. I just meant he wears a trenchcoat and talks in a slow gruff voice while walking the mean streets of Chicago. He looks like a hard-boiled detective to me. Especially compared to the wise-cracking kid on the sunny streets of San Francisco in Watch_Dogs 2.
But you’re right, the way Aiden beats people with his stick is definitely more of an amoral Batman. I guess I didn’t mind that stuff because I played it like a stealth game and the only deaths I saw were in cut scenes.
In the 90s, Marvel created the 2099 storyline which re-introduced a couple existing characters in the year 2099 (like Dr. Doom 2099 and Spider-man 2099). Of those characters, I think Ghost Rider 2099 was the most cyberpunk....
What kids movies would you consider to be cyberpunk? That is, not cyberpunk movies that happen to lack adult themes (like maybe Tron) but movies that are intentionally marketed towards kids and happen to be cyberpunk?...
That’s why I thought this would be an interesting question to discuss. Cyberpunk is typically a pretty nihilistic genre so it’s hard to make a true cyberpunk movie that’s accessible to children, but there are other aspects of the genre that I think could still fit in a children’s movie.
Mr. Robot did an amazing job of making a “modern day” cyberpunk story. It takes place in the real world yet has everything you would want from a cyberpunk show. But even with how amazing it was, I don’t know if I could re-visit the show after watching it when it was new....
Honestly, that’s where I’m stuck. It depends on what you want out of the show. If you want more hacking, it’s minimal. But if you want more focus on an unreliable narrator with mental health issues, the show is phenomenal.
If you’ve never seen Cyber City Oedo 808, you really need to. It’s a classic cyberpunk anime and only 3 episodes long, so it isn’t much of a commitment....
“Neon Blood is a 2.5D tactical action-adventure RPG developed by ChaoticBrain Studios. Players will embody Axel McCoin, a detective from the megacity of Viridis out to rebel against the injustices caused by the drastic class differences within the city. Become a mark of the revolution by dispatching dangerous enemies, using...
Steam Next Fest is going on right now and I thought “I should make a list of fun cyberpunk demos to try!” And then I looked at what cyberpunk demos were available. It’s weird. I still decided to make a list of at least… interesting games I found....
I’ve never seen Total Recall 2070. All I know about it is it lasted 22 episodes and was inspired more by Blade Runner than Total Recall. It’s one of the few live-action cyberpunk TV shows though, so I’m tempted to watch it....
Archangel Protocol is about a cyberpunk world where everyone has ubiquitous access to cyberspace. And there are reports of people seeing angels in cyberspace. The main character is an ex-police officer who has lost her access to cyberspace and doesn’t believe in these angel sightings. But then the Archangel Michael knocks on...
When I first watched the trailer for Black Lotus I thought it was just a generic story that they slapped the Blade Runner title on for some name recognition. But after watching it, the story truly does fit within the Blade Runner universe. The themes of what it means to be human and whether Replicants should be treated as human...
Elysium hits all the themes of a cyberpunk movie. It has high-tech low-lifes, it has corporations in total control, it has a massive inequality gap, it has technology leading to dehumanization. But what it doesn’t have, is neon-lit rainy streets at night....
Johnny Mnemonic (and Ghost in the Shell) was still all neon-lit cities at night. My point was more that Elysium goes in the opposite direction by having a dry, arid world in the daylight while still fitting in cyberpunk themes.
Even since lemmy.villa-straylight.social instance which hosted the !cyberpunk closed without any notice, it created a vacuum around cyberpunk content. I’m hoping to change that....
That’s great news and I’d love any help you can give! Also, I’m glad you found this new community. Your username is one of the few I actually remembered and was half-tempted to DM you to tell you about this community but I didn’t want to make it weird by begging you to come back. 😀
