@KevinStandlee

With the Chengdu Hugo team refusing to explain their exclusion of facially-qualified nominees, is there a mechanism by which the Glasgow Business Meeting may inquire formally to the Chengdu Committee? I labor under no illusion that they'll feel obligated to respond, but it puts fandom on the record.

I'm actually tempted to propose a resolution putting an asterisk on the 2023 Hugos, but that would unfairly punish the winners, who are in no way culpable.

@Worldcon

KevinStandlee,

@nitpicking I don't know. You might want to ask the Glasgow Business Meeting team. I am not part of that team, and right now, I'm rather happy about that state of affairs. I do have sympathy for them, though, after my experience chairing in 2015.

IMO (remember, I'm not part of the 2024 meeting staff), there is no existing method outside of amending the constitution for the asterisk proposal that you suggest. This is not an official ruling, just my personal opinion.

WSFS Infodump https://kevin-standlee.dreamwidth.org/2296661.html Do not click on this if you do not want a long post explaining how Worldcon, WSFS, and the Hugo Awards work and the context of the 2023 Hugo Awards. Do not say I did not warn you!

The Hugo Awards voting results have been released and some eyebrows have been raised by patterns in the data and the disqualification of works by RF Kuang and Xiran Jay Zhao. The discussion on File770 has been interesting:

Anyone have any insights here? It sounds like the World Science Fiction Convention administrators have been unresponsive.

@ausir @adam @nitpicking The Cairo bid has announced that they have have not been able to obtain the necessary permission of their government to bid.

Hmm ... @taiyo reports from China that the venue has a Hugo hall. @KevinStandlee (when you get back), is that something the Mark Protection Committee authorized?

KevinStandlee,
@KevinStandlee@mastodon.social avatar

@taiyo @nitpicking It didn’t need to be authorized, although they did ask us. Look at the various “Olympic Coliseums” named thus because they hosted the games.

@nitpicking Thanks. We've now been told that the convention will provide us with transportation between the airport and the convention site, which is reassuring.

@nitpicking One of the reasons I buy SAS shoes is that they are mostly still made in the USA.

I know the way from San Jose to San Francisco via transit, but it’s complicated, especially early in the morning. Step 1: catch an early train south from the station in front of my hotel.

KevinStandlee,
@KevinStandlee@mastodon.social avatar

@LaNaehForaday That’s an easy mistake for a first time rider to make. I am an experienced transit rider, but it has been years since I last rode these system, and all of them (VTA, Caltrain, Muni) have different processes.
