Wow, an AI method (AlphaDev) designing algorithm routines (so, better than humans). Sorting algorithms, fundamental in Computer Science. History is made here. Should we be impressed?

It was reviewed by humans and included in LLVM++ code. First change in this part of code in >10 years. You know what this means. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-06004-9

My analysis in Just Security of uses space of tech in context of Ukraine war, and also risks of space operations. International law stipulates that activities of Starlink may be directly attributable to U.S. State. This introduces certain complexities.

Blowing up a dam is a violation of international humanitarian law, I cite Protocol Additional I to Geneva Conventions. "installations containing dangerous forces, namely dams, ..., shall not be made the object of attack"

US Congress-submitted project for a simple regulation of AI. Like in Europe - generated content would have to be labeled/marked as such. Let's see what happens to it. It WOULD work because platforms/social networks would be responsible to hunt/verify. https://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/23832788/torres-ai-disclosure-bill-text.pdf

In US Air Force simulation/story an AI-drone decides to attack the human operator. Because it 'identified it' as an obstacle to effectiveness. Is this the future you want? :-) “We trained the system – ‘Hey don’t kill the operator – that’s bad. You’re gonna lose points if you do that’. So what does it start doing? It starts destroying the communication tower that the operator uses to communicate with the drone to stop it from killing the target”

Update: the military person says that he “mis-spoke”, and nothing has been done, nothing happened. I guess that the US Army communications have a difficult crisis end of the week :)

Just got the proofs of my upcoming book on cybersecurity, that covers the topic very broadly. Feels great! Need to look through the proofs now. Also, I just sent the thing to some lucky ones for the opinion/etc :-) https://www.routledge.com/Philosophy-of-Cybersecurity/Olejnik-Kurasinski/p/book/9781032527604

One in five articles published in scientific/biomedical journals may contain faked data produced by unauthorised “paper mills” that are paid to fabricate scientific submissions. The majority of fake research comes from China. https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2023.05.06.23289563v1.full.pdf

Just got the "working manuscript" (with last changes/edits/comments/requests/etc) of my book Philosophy of Cybersecurity (in preparation) from Routledge/CRC publisher, with edits/comments/suggestions. Few thousand of these. That will be some lots of work for me :)

The French project intended to fight foreign propaganda, the French government is considering to enact a GREAT FIREWALL, that would be blocking access to some content/sites. I wonder how it ends used. Advertised under the term "public cybersecurity".

LLMs have 'emergent abilities' (or maybe even 'sparks of intelligence'!), or not and all depends how we define things? 'one can CHOOSE a metric which LEADS TO the inference of an emergent ability or another metric which DOES NOT'. Let's not fool ourselves! https://arxiv.org/pdf/2304.15004.pdf

Western countries (G7) at a collision point with China over AI? In the summary of the meeting, it was noted that artificial intelligence/AI is to be based on "democratic values". According to Chinese law, it is supposed to support "socialist values". “should be human centric and based on democratic values, including protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms and the protection of privacy and personal data.” So, now what? https://www.soumu.go.jp/main_content/000879099.pdf

Curious research finds that allegedly there's no gender disparity/discrimination in academic science?
