Thanks a lot for your very thorough explanations! ๐Ÿ™

I hope Iโ€™ll be able to extract the knot with the help of steam and heat - otherwise, Iโ€™ll go with your jig!

Beautiful razor!

PS: Please donโ€™t buy all the NOS razors, and leave something for the rest of us

Try starting with the razor flat against your skin, then increase the angle (with no pressure!) until the razor starts catching the lather. Thatโ€™s the angle you want to keep. Start on the cheeks - where everything is flat, and only go to more demanding areas once you are comfortable on the cheeks with the grain.

Sunday, April 14, 2024: Sunny Sunday

Iโ€™m continuing (and finishing) my stagging weekend. Itโ€™s still sunny outside, but not as warm as yesterday. The pollen in the air is not impressed by the cold, as my allergies can tell you.

Have a good Sunday!

Welcome!

Most artisan soap comes in plastic tubs - though some sell refills (Stirling being among them), which you can store however you like.

I would recommend getting a few samples from Stirling (which are 1 ounce sized): they are good value, and you can test a bit what kind of scent you like. You can also look a bit around here what soaps people are using. I would just recommend avoiding Ariana & Evans, whose soaps have a tendency to provoke fragrance burns.

For beyond basics, I donโ€™t know โ€“ maybe try witch hazel as an after shave?

Cool razor, but looks dangerous!

I had cleaned my brushes today with vinegar, and I must not have rinsed off well enough - in any case, the lather was clearly worse than yesterday.

I also honed the Koraat today. I was nervous with the smiling razor, but it went well enough.

Have a good night!

Saturday, April 6, 2024: Warm, but cloudy

Temperatures have risen beyond 20 degrees here, but the sun has not come out. Iโ€™ve used several times Marduk, and I would assume that I have at the most another 10 shaves in it. A nice soap, but requires heavy loading.

Have a good day!

Wednesday, April 3, 2024: Marduk Mittwoch

A very good shave - I used a ridiculous amount of soap, which is apparently what is required in order to get a good lather going with hard water. I did something right when honing the Friodur โ€“ trouble is, I donโ€™t quite know what.

Have a good night!

Watched it, thanks! Great video, with very helpful illustrations, and you dumbed down the material science to the point where I had the impression understanding ๐Ÿ˜‚

You seem to be on your way to wetstonetube fame - continue the good work!

Seconding toothbrush+dish soap.

But you shouldnโ€™t need to do this every shave - if your lather is good, you should be able to rinse it with water, and it should be gone. Otherwise, your lather is too dry.

First: the damage of your razor is probably for the moment only cosmetic, but it will start to corode more easily. But you can wait before you buy something else.

Most razors in this price range will be mostly zamac alloy, which you wonโ€™t hand down to your great grand-children, but will last for years, if properly taken care of.

Some razors are marketed as โ€œtripple chromedโ€. Are they any better?

Iโ€™m not aware of any difference in chroming; I would take this as marketing speech (Itโ€™s toasted!). Which are these?

For good DE razors in the 50ยฃ range, check:

  • Edwin Jagger
  • Mรผhle
  • Merkur

All of these also have stainless steel razors.

Anyway: if you have a tendency to drop things, more expensive stainless steel or brass razors will also tend to be heavier. They wonโ€™t break, but they can deform on impact. And they can chip your sink.

PorkButtsNTaters666,
@PorkButtsNTaters666@sub.wetshaving.social avatar

Thatโ€™s true - on the other hand, it would not go beyond 50ยฃ either ๐Ÿ˜Š

Havenโ€™t tried it, but only heard good things about it.
