whosgotthepudding,

It is. It has a little clip in the middle that holds the blades. From what I gather, you set the blade in the clip and pull the leather, then flip and pull it the other way. It’s cool. I’ll try to remember to grab a pic showing that this evening.

whosgotthepudding,

Very steampunk indeed. From what I can tell, these were made by Heljestrand between 1900 and 1939. The lines along the back give me really strong 30’s vibes. The most steampunk looking decade!

whosgotthepudding,

I think deleting after X amount of time seems reasonable.

whosgotthepudding,

Solid haul and great job on the cleanup! That Henckels really is the star of that show. I’m sure that’s going to make for a nice shaver.

Bummer about the 72½. That’s great to hear it still shaves well, though. Vintage hunting can be such a crap shoot. Some issues are so hard to spot from pictures, and some people are really sneaky about concealing them.

What’s your honing progression looking like?

whosgotthepudding,

That sounds like a solid progression!

from what I understand natural stones are a little bit on the soft side for honing stainless steel

You can definitely get some super hard jnats that work wonders with stainless. My Nakayama is 5++ and it married super well with Infernals 17.

I hope you try some naturals at some point. They’re fascinating, doubly so jnats imo.

whosgotthepudding,

I look forward to when you take the plunge.

I go by feel mostly, but always have my microscope for that extra verification of consistency. I’m probably a lot more anal about it than I need to be.

whosgotthepudding,

Yeah that price tag is a little of a 😬

But that stone is probably top tier. Not only really rare, it’s kinda collectable I suppose too, as it has both Maruichi and Maruka stamps. Probably stamped during the transition of ownership from Kato (Maruichi) to Hatanaka (Maruka). Either way, either of those stamps guarantee quality.

You might be able to find something more reasonably priced, however. Ozuku, for example, are typically pretty damn hard. I don’t think I’ve ever met a soft one (though admittedly I haven’t met a lot 🤣). Other mines like Shobu and Aiiwatani are also pretty solid. You could find a really good stone for only a couple hundred to begin with.

One of the bigger price hikes on stones is mostly looks, believe it or not, over fineness. With exceptions, of course, like in the case of the rare and venerable Nakayama.

whosgotthepudding,

You’re in luck, my funds are tapped… for now!

whosgotthepudding,

9th NOS vintage in just the last few days?

On the dot 😬 I’m expecting one other thing, but it’s being made custom by Roman Kamlash so I’m not certain when that’ll be done, much less make the trip here.

Have you held it next to a 14 to compare the geometry?

I ended up doing just that, after seeing you comment. It’s about 1/4" shorter than my 14’s, on top of being 7/8. There’s definitely some similarities in the spine and tang, but some minor differences overall. I’m going to give it a whirl in the morning.

whosgotthepudding,

Oh yeah, this one is 100% a keeper. Felt great.

I originally set out to find myself one nice razor to add to my collection. At first I was looking for a western grind Iwasaki kamisori, but then I found that NOS Iberia within my budget and jumped.

The Kobar 7 day was just happenstance. I had seen the lot on a small auction site and tossed a bid out there and ended up winning.

This razor was pure accident. I had just stumbled on it and just knew I just had to have it.

whosgotthepudding,

Neat that you’re the first to get a shot at honing them

I’m pretty fond of that part myself!

whosgotthepudding,

Where are you getting the history of straight razors? Is there a book I can buy?

Just from digging around on the internet. I wish had a book that had all this info. I did speak with a gentleman once that had a pretty detailed book. It might have just been for Sheffield razors, though. I’ll have to reach back out to him and find out more about it.

I finally found a 6/8 Puma

Oh fantastic! I still think about that 5/8 one from time to time. I still intend to grab another one at some point. I’ll be curious to hear how it treats you!

whosgotthepudding,

Here’s some information I found about the ERNs:

Carl Friedrich Ern founded razor company in 1873 in Wald-Solingen and became biggest razors maker with its famous Hexe machine with permit to ground both sides of razor blade

The company was founded in 1873, registrated December, 4 1874 and first located in Solingen-Wald from 1922 and at Kanalstrasse 43 in 1939. The Ern family were razor-grinders and Carl Friedrich took over his fathers company. As many of Solingen grinders, thes honed razors for other companies to. E.g. In 1860 Nathaniel Ern only ground and honed razors for Henckels, but soon began to make their own razors. Nathaniel taught his son Carl to do the job - at that time there were 20 workers and seven masters. Singing and talking during work were forbidden, drinking never allowed. The company moved to Wald (to Wittekulle), an outlying district of Solingen, in 1876.

In 1893 they introduced the ‘Hexe’ machine (double wheel hollow grinder) to hollow-grind razors, said to be a benefit to all razor makers.

The eagle and snake was used from 1874 by C. Friedrich ERN & Co. until it was superseded in 1896 with the more familiar crown and sword

whosgotthepudding,

No pardon needed! The thought behind the 7 day is to greatly increase the time between honing. As well as a myth behind high carbon steel and that it needs to “rest” between uses. This is only just a myth, however.

whosgotthepudding,

I would recommend starting out just going with the grain on your cheeks. You need only extremely light pressure. Start your downward motion before making contact with your skin, and lift off before stopping. If you’re regularly cutting yourself and it’s not just the point doing it, you could be coming to a stop on your skin, and even the slightest sideways movement will open you up. Good luck!

whosgotthepudding,

Hope it helps, my friend! If you want to send me more detailed pics, I can dig further.

whosgotthepudding,

This is my favorite razor in my den. The point can certainly humble a guy, tho.

whosgotthepudding,

I think the reasoning for it being my favorite is mostly sentimental. It was just love at first sight when I got it.

Is your Iwasaki tamahagane?

whosgotthepudding,

I’ll have to give it a watch!
