When George Bush I barely beat Patrick Buchanan in , that was widely seen as a death knell for his reelection bid despite the success of Operation Desert Storm the year before. He fielded around 56% of the vote that year. And Trump only got 57% in in 2020. @RealJournalism doing well an iowa only matters if nobody has heard of you. Iowa is small enough that you can talk to people and cheaply get a lot of supporters and thus get national attention from a win. If everyone knows you it doesn't matter as you don't get many delegates.
