I'd wish more apps supported UnifiedPush. Great protocol. Sadly of the apps I use, only Element and Tusky supports it.

For the record, I self-host a ntfy instance so I have full control over my push notifs (or at least for the supporting apps) owo

Annoying that Mastodon restricts me to 5 questions in a poll. Or at least all the clients I've tried with it does. And most of the clients also does a poor job displaying long texts in poll options :/

Reina,

@admin @OctaviaConAmore Sadly the admin of this instance doesn't use the instance themselves and isn't particularly responsive. I've been considering moving instance, but I don't like that I can't migrate my posts.

Maybe I just have to give in and accept I can't bring them with me and still migrate? ... I'll see what I do.

Would cutie.space accept me if I migrated there? I don't always CW politics, but I do pretty much always CW most sensitive topics like sexual abuse, self-harm, nazism, so on. Also, I can't currently afford to donate, but I might in the future when I have a paid job.

Reina,

@admin @OctaviaConAmore Signed up for an account. It looks like a cozy instance :)

With Nvidia actually working to improve Wayland support, Nouveau drivers implementing a lot of the features from the Nvidia open-source codebase, and Wayland compositors becoming better, I think that within a year from now, recommending Linux to people will become a no-brainer for me.

I'll list some issues below preventing me from recommending Linux atm. Keep in mind that not all of them are a thing on all Wayland compositors and some of them could be Nvidia driver issues.

) Stuttering while using the desktop,
) Lack of VRR support in GNOME and shoddy VRR support on KDE (idk how it is outside of those),
) Weird jumping around of registered mouse position in GNOME for Xwayland apps,

X11 comes with its own set of issues, so I don't like recommending it either.

But yeah, things seem to be going in the right direction, and once the system itself feels more stable, it will be easy to recommend it to people.

As for me, I can deal with it. I do use X11 tho because of the aformentioned issues. But I will gladly switch to Wayland when the issues above are solved. KDE recently added VRR support on Wayland and that's awesome! Tho, its implementation right now results in stuttering for me and when playing a 24hz video, it wants to sync to 48hz but the result is that my monitor starts flickering wildly. And this is despite my monitor supporting VRR down to 5hz iirc.

Anyway, seeing the recent improvements makes me hopeful!

Reina,

@hellomiakoda The first issue I think is an Nvidia driver issue, the second one was one of my points but I think I attributed it to GNOME. It happens with Xwayland apps for me on GNOME but I couldn't reproduce it on KDE. Maybe they fixed it since last you checked? Or maybe VirtualBox is just worse? Do you get the same issue in Thunderbird?

Reina,

@hellomiakoda Tbf, I primarily run GNOME. KDE is way too buggy for me. I do switch to KDE when I watch anime tho as MPV on X11 engages VRR which is really neat (less judder).

I personalmy really like Thunderbird tho. I mean, I am looking forward to the major changes planned for this year tho.

Image attached is a mockup of a future version of Thunderbird in light theme

Reina,

@potatoxel @hellomiakoda Most of it is optional. Not all tho

One of the (many) big issues with capitalism is how it only incentivises products that are profitable or made to be profitable. This means that you can't really make a company that creates something purely because it's a good thing, as it needs to be perverted into something profitable. That could be by making it proprietary, it could be by injecting ads (read: propaganda), or it could be by selling your user's data.

Sure, sometimes we see products that don't fit the above. Linux is one such thing. It manages to live off of donations (mostly by corporations relying on it). And there are other products like that too. But those exist in spite of capitalism, not because of it.

self-driving cars are truly amazing because the only way it could work is by reinventing trains

Some days I think "I should just invent a music notation system that actually works" but that's probably too much work

Reina,

@gotrans The music notation system we have does work tho. It's just that it leaves a lot up for interpretation. And that is a good thing imo.

Reina,

@gotrans Okay, that is fair

  • Reina,

@mia Btw, that part I agree with 100%. I switched away from Windows half a year ago for GNOME/Fedora. I just don't understand what you meant by tech being impressive in relation to Windows sucking

    Reina,

    @mia ... I see it now ... Hahaha xD

    I'm dum xD

I kinda regret going with Fedora Workstation 37 on my performance laptop. It has the system for GUI updating and even release upgrades but the performance drop is insane on GNOME over MATE.

    Reina,

@unicatte Do you mean the update interface in the GNOME store? I'm having issues with the GNOME store requiring a lot of unecessary reloads and looking for new updates is incredibly slow compared to doing it from the commandline.

    Reina,

@unicatte By reloads I meant page refreshes

    Reina,

@unicatte Try switching to X11, that could be why. Especially if you're on Nvidia hardware. You can do it from the login screen
