Good. I think the other option - setting a precedent allowing businesses to skirt discrimination laws by claiming their behaviour was art - would have been a rather poor decision.

I suspect that would be the better option for helping with the related issue of retaining existing staff…

Common sense (surprisingly) appears. Hopefully stuff like that is actually legal in NSW, because even if it isn’t I’m keeping on doing it myself - calling a plumber in for something that can be done by anyone with a couple of brain cells to rub together seems a waste of both their time and my money.

Are you sure it doesn’t have a S or P bend under there? Since floor drains often only get water down them once in a blue moon there is a possibility there is a trap but it’s dried out to the point it lets smells waft back up the pipe.

If it really doesn’t have a trap and you aren’t interested in installing one yourself the least effort option is to tape over the drain outlet until you get it fixed.

It really is silly how long this is taking to make progress, even stage 2A is taking a huge amount of time for the distance it’s going. It’s a pity the light rail was so politicised as a north vs south spending thing as I think it would have made sense to be at least getting the planning ready for other lines (e.g. Belco, potentially airport) while this was going on.

I’ve never had to deal with it, but I’m not surprised that t’s a pain. Large IT projects seem unfortunately likely to just get to the point of barely usable and then not progress much from there.

It’s not just government projects either - I have the misfortune of having to deal with work orders through a system owned by a company which definitely has enough money to make something better but using it (particularly the mobile app) makes you question the sanity of whoever approved it for release.

That’s an expensive way to learn the difference between a hi cube and a standard container…

Impressed at the strength of that beam - to do that to a container (and the twist locks) would take a solid whack.

It is political - there are a variety of people who are against modern Australia’s British colonial roots, ranging the gamut from those who want all European influence gone and the remaining people to revert back to a romanticised view of the Stone Age to those who (more realistically) want more Indigenous influence upon our current system. Somewhere along that line is where the writers of this would fall, the ‘colony’ they want to fall would either refers to all European practises and institutions or some more abstract view of European influence over our society.

Could be a fun thing to try again, pity it’d be unlikely to be allowed today.

I am pessimistic about this change. Given how pricey actual Vinnies shops have become and the possibility of good stuff getting diverted across a much broader network I suspect the chances of a bargain will decrease even further.

There’s an article on the riot act which has a quote from Vinnies in relation to this:

“They’ll have the opportunity to apply for jobs and join Vinnies, and we want as many people as possible to come and join the Vinnies family.”

I’ll note that’s not saying they will be employed by Vinnies, but hopefully at least some can continue. The article however also says the city shops are going to close so I expect there will be a reduction in job numbers due to that in addition to the potential of Vinnies bringing their own people in.

It sounds like the Green Shed company will close down, while the tip shops themselves (one at each of the two tip dropoff points) will continue operation under new management. The Green Shed also operates two more conventional shops in the city (selling better quality items picked from the shed collections) and these are apparently closing down as they will no longer have their main source of stock.

The ABC now likes to do clickbait style headlines like that to try and grab attention, it’s a trend that annoys me. They also often rotate through options including a more traditional headline depending on what device you use and what time you access it - currently the headline is showing for me as “Electric car sales in Australia’s outer suburbs take off as commuters pocket ‘ridiculous’ savings”, which while still a bit hyped up is more informative.

I’m only guessing really but I think they should be ok if the digital copies could be considered the original. For example I would expect that a printout of a digital bank statement would be something that you could get certified as you can pull up your bank website/app and display the ‘original’, but you might run into issues trying to convince someone that a photo of a card counts as it’s clearly not the original form.

Once you’ve got a birth certificate sorted I would recommend going a bit further with the document hunt - assuming you were born after 1986. If you ever need to prove you’re a citizen (which you may for some jobs) and you were born post '86 you’ll also need to track down a copy of a parent’s Australian birth certificate or other proof of their Australian citizenship before your birth. You’ll also need this proof of citizenship if you want a passport in the future so it’s worth tracking down.

Tau,
@Tau@aussie.zone avatar

If you were born post '86 your Australian birth certificate is not considered sufficient proof of you being an Australian citizen (not sure on the reason for that year being the cutoff), so if you’re going for the natural born Australian line of proof you would then need to prove you had a parent who was a citizen at the time of your birth. It doesn’t necessarily need to be your parent’s birth certificate, a passport from before your birth would also count (as would the certificate you get when becoming a citizen if they weren’t born here).

At least though my generation only has to go back one step to prove citizenship. It’s going to be harder work for the growing number of people who have parents born after '86 and will therefore have to go back to their grandparents birth certificates if their parents didn’t get a passport or citizenship certificate before they were born.

It certainly makes things harder than they should be IMO, I’ve always thought it should be more along the lines of just proving you are who you say you are instead of chasing parents etc.

British white people have never

As long as you forget about the Irish, the Welsh, and (to a lesser extent IIRC) the Scots - all of whom are white and British.
