Alien/Aliens is a given for most people. I have been watching Event Horizon during the spooky season for years. What are some of your favorite books and movies with a horror/psychological thriller lean?
The fundamental tenet of a working democracy is voting. Everyone should have a vote and everyone should exercise their right to vote. To that end we have been seeing posts attempting to shame/mock or otherwise influence people not to vote. While this is a meme community, the idea that people shouldn’t vote goes against the...
For me I would say “The Expanse” is a huge one. If there was ever a self made family, the crew of the Rocinante is one of the best. The amount of time they spend together and how they congeal into life long partners and friends in the face of some truly awful events is really inspiring to me.
Bladerunner (and 2049) has a special place in my heart. There are so many classics that stretched film photography. Lawrence of Arabia. Alien. The Cell. Night of the Hunter. Dunkirk. 2001: A Space Odyssey. Just to name a few. What movies are your favorites that aren’t as known?
The one that comes most vividly to my mind (and I make fun of all the time) “The Survivors” I just couldn’t STAND that music box and the Deanna’s reaction to it.
Annorax from the Voyager episode “Year of Hell” really sticks in my mind. A tragic character doing incredible amounts of damage repeatedly to save one person. This episode is probably my favorite from the series.
We’ve been revisiting Futurama in the lead up to its Hulu return and I have to say the show is still one of the best of all time. The jokes still hit and the characters may even be MORE lovable than I remember. What are some of your favorite moments? (from the old show of course)
This is one of those movies that invite you into a new language once you see it. Amazing in both its effectiveness and hilarious camp. It almost contains the greatest fist fight scene of all time. But it’s not just a movie to be gawked at, It’s a movie to be savored....
We saw VERY few nominations for books in December, and I know everyone is very busy with the season. We’ll open nominations for January at the end of the month so be thinking about it....
I enjoyed the visual aspects (and performances) of Vesper. Somehow I hadn’t heard of this one at all when it released, but it was a decent story with some very cool world building and visuals. It actually feels a LOT like a Cronenberg film, but without the existential dread. Check it out if you are looking for a visual oddity.
I don’t mind subscribing to remove ads and improve payments for the channels that I watch, but if I am going to pay to remove ads, I don’t want to see ads. Ever.
For me it’s Fargo. I remember hating it when I say it 20 years ago, but after about a 10 year break I gave it another shot and can’t imagine how I ever hated it in the first place. Now one of my favorite movies of all time....
Sorry for running late on this one… Please drop some book club nominations for October (preferably not 1000 pages as we are getting started a little late)....
I know in my heart that it probably won't last, but I have such an awesome feeling of a clean slate with Lemmy. It feels so much more like the old internet before it just became a shopping cart. I don't know how long we can enjoy this brave new world, but I am here for it.
The spouse and I went to see Bottoms this weekend. It was one of the best comedies I’ve seen in years. Sort of cross between Fight Club, Superbad, and Starship Troopers (the satirical bit). I’d recommend this movie to anyone that can handle the crass content.

What are the actors/actresses that get a blank check from you (you'll watch anything they are in without needing extra motivation)?
For me it’s Karl Urban, Angelica Houston, Ryan Gosling, Tilda Swinton, Gary Oldman, and Jeff Bridges. Honorable Mention to Weird Al Yankovich.
2001: A Space Odyssey - Probably the most important science fiction film ever made. (lemmy.world)

The one that comes most vividly to my mind (and I make fun of all the time) “The Survivors” I just couldn’t STAND that music box and the Deanna’s reaction to it.
Who are some of your favorite non-recurring Star Trek characters (2 episodes or less per series)? (lemmy.world)
Annorax from the Voyager episode “Year of Hell” really sticks in my mind. A tragic character doing incredible amounts of damage repeatedly to save one person. This episode is probably my favorite from the series.

Fringe is a gem that changed the way I think about Sci-Fi TV (lemmy.world)
It was the first show that I can remember that was able to survive major shifts in the way the story was told.

How would you guys feel about having a book club for the community?
If you are up for the idea, how would you like to see something like that structured? I read a lot and would love to discuss.
